LAN Throughput Slow

I've got an RT-N66U with Merlin 374.39_0-em and between two N devices on the same 2.4 GHz network I get around 950 KB/s wireless transfer rate, which seems a bit slow to me. One device is a WinXP machine and the other is a Motorola Xoom (Android).

Are there any settings I should be looking for on the router or devices to try to improve it?

Throughput between two wireless devices is half the throughput you get from wireless to wired device. This is because the same radio must receive, then retransmit each data packet, using 2x airtime / bandwidth.

The Xoom is the weakest link with an N150 radio, probably linking at 65 Mbps. Best case throughput will be around 25 Mbps. Half that is 12 Mbps and you are getting 8 Mbps, not that far off, depending on distance and other wireless activity.
