Is it still Linux Asus 2.6.22.19? Is there any chance of even a slight upgrade, so that there would be ext4 support, which appeared only in 2.6.28? (afaik)

Openwrt is at 3.10 already but there's a slight chance of bricking the router (or is this an empty fear?), a risk i would not be very willing to take, and no hw acceleration limiting forwarding performance.

The kernel cannot be upgraded. It's tied to the closed source drivers that are compiled against that specific kernel version.
 
And Asus newer models are also still married to this ancient kernel version? Seems like my future router won't be an Asus then. Although upgrade time is probably 1-2 years away, so who knows what'll happen meanwhile.

Your future won't be any Broadcom based router you mean. The kernel is determined by the SoC manufacturer, not by the router manufacturer. Asus's Broadcom ARM routers use the exact same 2.6.36 kernel as Netgear's own ARM routers such as the R7000 or R8000.

So in the end, blame Broadcom, not Asus/Netgear/DLink/etc... for this.
 
dd-wrt have been playing with kernel 3.xx because they have commercial links and access to the Broadcom SDK to recompile their own - but I can't remember when their last release was!

OpenWRT were also chasing latest kernel revisions - but wireless always a problem because they don't have or want proprietary drivers...
 
so if both use same kernel, why 66u not suport ext4 ? when eg. 68u 87u have suport this fs ?

They don't. MIPS routers are on 2.6.22, ARM routers are on 2.6.36.
