New Around Here
I live in the UK in a fairly rural location. Unfortunately we can only get the old bog standard ADSL (8Mb) connection here, add in 42dB of line attenuation and we only really manage 4.5-6.5Mb/s. For some users that's plenty however as a family of five we can fill that capacity easily.
Presently we're running a NETGEAR DGN2000 however it's been a little unstable for both WiFi and general routing. This replaced a DG834GT that decided to give up on us. I feel I've had enough of NETGEAR routers now so unless they've decided to become good again, I'd rather try a different make.
One thing we have always done is run modem routers, rather than have two separate devices for each. The main issue I have is that these rarely have custom firmware. Now I'm looking at a different approach by picking up a modem and a router separately.
I'm looking for a router that is both stable and able to support several high bandwidth connections at once. For example, here are a few of the devices it'll need to run simultaneously:
The ethernet needs to be gigabit however I'm not too bothered with the WiFi, it'll need to be respectable for a laptop or two and the smartphones but anything that requires large bandwidth will be wired up through trusty RJ-45.
I'd also like the ability to run DD-WRT or Tomato for network monitoring and IP restricting, since network management is vital when trying to run all of the above on a 5Mb connection.
Anyone got any suggestions for a router, was looking at the ASUS RT-N66U and installing Tomato.

- My Desktop (Gaming, TeamSpeak/VOIP, Steam Downloads)
- Brother's Laptop (Anime Streaming, Uploading Manga art)
- Family PC (Spotify, Photo Uploads, Youtube)
- Dad's Home Laptop (Web Browsing, Photo Uploads)
- Dad's Work Laptop (VPN Connections)
- Five Smartphones (General Browsing)
