Hi Experts

I have got laptop and Desktop both of them have windows 7 ultimate OS.

At home from the laptop I can access a shared folder on desktop with no problem

I tried to enable the access to the shared folder over the internet while the laptop away from home, by implementing a VPN.

I have successfully managed to configure a VPN IPSec between home router DrayTek 2820Vn that acting as VPN server, and the laptop that has TheGreenBow VPN client.

Through VPN tunnel laptop can ping the ip address for the router and the ip address for home printer and ip address for home desktop , all of those are located at the other end of the VPN tunnel.

And I can access the web interface for the router as well by typing its private ip address.

On the laptop and through the VPN tunnel I tried to map the shard folder on the desktop (\\desktopname and \\desktopipaddress ) , but it didn't work!!!.

I believe I don't need to forward any port since my home router is acting as a VPN server ,,,,Isn't it ?

What other troubleshooting should I consider to make this works ?

Regards

Access the share using the IP address...not the host name.

\\ipaddress\sharename

You'll want to set your "server" to have a static LAN IP, so it doesn't change IP addresses on you.

Basically, it boils down to netbios traffic and name resolution not working through VPN tunnels....it usually doesn't. Yes there are tricks we use to get it working...but that's usually with more business grade equipment and when you have a local DNS service on the LAN to handle the name resolution. Those kinds of things are usually not present in home networks.

I'm not familiar with Draytec equipment 'cuz it's not popular here in the States.....but some routers with a decent feature set with have their own local DNS service which may allow this to work with host names.

Thanks YeOldeStonecat

Yes \\ipaddress\sharename worked, I just realized that Kaspersky internet security which was installed on the desktop was preventing the mapping of the shared folder on laptop , when I existed it , worked.

Now I am looking to enable that through kaspersky pure internet security that is installed on desktop where the shared folder is located

One more question

through LAN I can access the web interface for a network home printer by typing ip address for it into a browser.

I tried to access the printer via VPN tunnel but I couldn't ,,,,Is there something preventing that ?

Zillah,

Did you set up your network printer with DHCP or did you manually set the IP address ? If manually, did you set the gateway to be the Draytek router ? Sounds like the printer does not know how to route a response (missing or wrong gateway value on the printer) or there is some firewall issue blocking the VPN connection.

The firewall seems to have been the issue on the PC - perhaps you can add an exception to allow the VPN IP address range through which may be a better solution than disabling your firewall which is what it sounds like you have done.

Yes

Yes it is

Firewall on PC it shouldn't affect the network printer at all, I could be wrong

Unlike VPN PPTP and L2PTP , VPN IPSec tunnel doesn't assign an ip address to other end of the tunnel.
