I currently have a GT-AXE11000 and the max number of open NAT connections (cf Tools page) is 300000 which might become a limitation for me and I was wondering if the GT-AXE16000 or GT-BE98 had a higher threshold in which case I might upgrade.

What would be the purpose of limiting or reducing the max # of NAT connections?
This setting is only in Merlin?

I'm highly in doubt any home router can actually handle 300K connections.

The only way to reach this high number of connections with your limited number of clients is heavy torrenting and the router will slow down to a crawl long before that. Leave this value at default and don't worry about it. You are trying to fix non-existing at the moment problem.

No torrents, but clearly not something that the average user will do (hosting nodes for some blockchains).

I'm currently at ~100K open connections, router CPU ~30% usage, no noticeable impact on RAM. No impact on bandwidth and latency. I'll see how it goes when I reach 300K, but if the cpu is a limiting factor, switching to GT-AXE16000 or GT-BE98 won't solve it since it's the same cpu but with a slightly higher frequency.

This is not what home routers are made for. If you have special requirements you have to find appropriate hardware.
