New Around Here
Hi, I'm going to buy my first NAS and therefore have a couple of questions.
I'm considering buying the Synology ds410j but I'm wondering if the cpu and the ram is sufficient to run Ampache.

My plan is to store my files and stream music to my android device.
Is ds410j powerful enough? Is it possible to upgrade the ram?

Doesn't look like I need to run Ampache with the DSM 3.0
I'm very curious how the DSM 3.0 feels. I mean is it laggy/slow on 800mhz and 128mb of ram?

Is ds410 so much better than the ds410j? I'm only going to use it for personal storage, streaming music and movies.

Ds410 = 3950,- NOK ~ 655$
Ds410j = 2795,- NOK ~ 457$

Input are much appreciated :)

Yes, the $299 Synology DS-410j. I have been thinking the same way. Despite that prices have fallen over the last year, I can't help but say that most other models seem overpriced.

I could certainly come up with 2x or 3x the money for a 4-bay NAS. I guess it could get me 2x or 3x the write speed. But not even 2x the read speed. The same UI. The same capacity. The same reliability.

AFAIK this $299 Synology DS-410j delivers 30MB/s write and 60MB/s read on RAID-5. It seems to me the next higher model, they're asking $600, $800. It just seems like extremely diminishing returns. OK I get hot swap but I'll probably use that once a year. Faster write speed is nice I guess, but most of my transfers are "start it and come back later" anyway, and actually I won't be doing many transfers if my torrents go onto a central server from the git' go. I only have 20 megabit down on my ADSL from newshosting.com.

I'd like to convince myself to spend more money, but I just can't figure it. It seems like the next model up is at least $500 or $600. I could buy TWO of the $299 Synology DS-410j and stuff my old 1TB drives in it after I move over to the first one. Am I missing something here folks?

Then again, the $650 Synology DS411+ promises read rates of 112MB/sec and write rates of 106MB/sec (RAID 5). http://www.slashgear.com/synology-diskstation-ds411-nas-review-2695389/

I have to say Synology seems like the price leader at both the low end and the high end. Yeah, QNAP is great and Cisco picked 'em, but it seems like the other manufacturers want over $1000 to deliver 100MB read and write speeds, n'est pas?

Its a shame Synology won't cough up any review units at all for this site.
