First off let me say great job to Merlin. Thank you for all the work you have put into this project.



Now for my problem. This is the third RT-AC66U I have purchased and I have had the same issue with each router. I get really slow speeds on all my devices.

I have the Asus gigabit wireless card (PCE-AC66) on my desktop, I also have two killer bigfoot 1103 (450mbps) wifi cards on my two laptops.

I get a 450mbps connection on my laptops and 800~ mbps on my desktop but when I try to either stream a video file from my NAS box or copy a file I get 10-100kb/s. Yes I said KB!


When I connect all the devices using the ethernet cable all the transfer rates are fine. Also when I use my crappy 20 dollar router wifi works fine albeit at 54mbps :p


I tried both 5gz and 2.4ghz and I get the same results. 2.4 is at channel 11 and 5ghz is 36.

I will also add a second post with my log information so feel free to skip reading it if you do not need it.


Thanks in advance for any help I can get. I really hope to get this router to work. It really is a great router and I hoped that a firmware would fix all its issues but at this point I have paid allot of money for an expensive paper weight :(

Have you tried transferring a file between both computers rather than from your NAS? Just to see if it makes any difference.

Make sure you have Jumbo Frames disabled on the NAS if you had it enabled - it might cause issues since wireless probably can't handle those large packets.

I doubt it's related to interference since it happens on both band. Doubt it's related to defective HW since you've tried more than one router.
 
if you go jumbo frames, you have to have everything with jumbo frames end-to-end or you get slowness. I wouldn't recommend using them for home use.

I have tried transferring files from my computers and the same result.

I will try disabling jumbo frames on all my devices. I am at work right now so I cannot try it for another hour or two.
 
hmm under jumbo frame for my NAS box, all I see are the following options:

1500
4074
7418
9000

It was under 1500 since that is the only option I recognized from my other devices aka ps3 etc.

I was also thinking.... Since my previous routers all worked fine with the current network setup then why is jumbo frame acting up now?

PS: Previous routers where e4200 fake cisco (worked at 450mbps no issues) current e1000 (works at 54 but i got it for 20 bucks).

So why when I connect on my laptops with 450mbps and desktop with 700-800 mbps do I get the super slow speeds?

EDIT:

So jumbo frames was disabled on my router, once I enabled it the transfer speeds increased to 600-900KB/s...... So that is like a 100% improvement but still EXTREMELY slow :( the file I transferred was 7gigs mkv.

I would start with the basics, as there is no reason why three different routers should exhibit such low speed. You need to simplify the network to its minimum, with as little configuration changes as possible to isolate the root cause.

1) Reset your router to factory defaults
2) Configure only your Internet access and the wireless. Use WPA2-Personal and AES security, leave it on Auto for now. Do not change any other settings.
3) Try with one single computer connected and the modem - no other device, wired or wireless. Do a speed test on Speedtest.net. Is the speed close to what your ISP is giving you?
4) If the speed is correct, add just your NAS, and try a file transfer. Try in both directions: from the NAS, and to the NAS.
5) Make sure that the cable between the NAS and the router is Cat5e or Cat6. If your old router only had 100 Mbits ports and you are using an older cable, that would explain why you are having issues with the new router.

I will try doing a factory reset like you said in your steps 1-4.

As for 5 all my routers where gigabit speed for the ethernet ports. All my cables are cat6 throughout the house. The speed is horrible for every device from the laptops, ps3, xbox and even the tablets.

If I hard wire the devices (laptops,desktop and ps3/xbox) they all work perfectly. The issue is with the wireless.

All three RT-AC66U routers had the same issue.

I will post back after I reset the router.
