So I got everything the way I want it except for the silly https://routername that you get when you enable https administration of the router. (I know if you set the router to be admin'd from the wan you can change the name https name but I do not want to admin from the wan.)

Can the https name be changed in not selecting to enable admin from the wan ?

The router host name is fixed to "router.asus.com", there is no way you can change that.
I assume most users do never use the host name and use the router IP address to access the router user interface.

When you enable HTTPS, you must specify HTTPS in the host name and include the applicable port number, resulting in a host name of e.g. "https://router.asus.com:8443", or use the IP address e.g. "https://192.168.1.1:8443".

The above is for LAN access only, for WAN access the router host name and IP address will be different.

You can change that with hosts.postconf file. Read README-merlin how to do that.

He didn't state any firmware number.

AsusWRT Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.378_9459

Are you all sure that once https is enabled you can get to the router using https://192.168.1.1:8443

The only way I can get into the router if https is enabled is using https://router.asus.com:8443
If I go to the IP useing https://192.168.1.1:8443

I get a web page with this:
"Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh.
Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-N66R.
To access the settings of RT-N66R, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number."

I just tried and it does work for me (RT-N66U with 3.0.0.4.378_9459).
It only causes a security certificate error:

Hit continue to access the router user interface login page.
The url "https://router.asus.com:8443" works as well (with the same certificate error).

Try CTRL+F5 on that page

Thanks for the info on the certificate error.
A old exception certificate for 192.168.1.1 was the issue, I removed it and then I created a new exception certificate.

This is exactly the message I get when accessing my RT-AC66U over https (Firefox 43.0.4). I have added the router IP address in the Java and Noscript exceptions, and tried the Ctrl+F5 tip, but it made no difference.

Strangely, when I access using Internet Explorer, I get a completely different message:
"There is a problem with this website's security certificate".

Does anyone know why this is please ?

RT-AC66U, Merlin 378.56_2

Old or invalid certificate or certificate exception in Firefox the fix is:

In Firefox select Tools > Options > Certificates > View Certificates
Then Delete any Certificates you have for 192.168.1.1 and also the router name if its in there.
Save the settings
Exit Firefox

Restart Firefox and go to the 192.168.1.1 you should now get a warning about a cetificate
Choose to make an exception.

It should now work.

Found it - in Firefox, clearing "Offline Web Content and User Data" gets rid of the "Settings have been updated" message and the login screen is shown normally as it should be.

Just mentioning it here in case others have the same issue later.
