Hi all
I have 40/10 Internet connection and I work form home but when I connect to my work via VPN I only get 5 Mbps. I called my IT guys and they tell me that no one is having this problem except me in my company and it could be a Router issue as by Default some Routers throttle the bandwidth when connected to VPN. My quaetion is where can I find this option in my Router if this is true. I am on Merlin 378.55......
Thanks in advance....

Is the RT-N66U acting as the VPN client/server? If so, very low speeds are expected because the CPU on the device is very slow.

Your firmware version is over a year old. Security wise, that is not good. ;)

I suggest you update it asap to the latest version.

A router cannot 'know' if VPN is used on a network and it can't throttle it 'by default' either. Your IT guys should be upgraded.

As Nullity indicates, if you're using the 'N66U as the VPN client, it will severely limit the throughput as that is dependent on raw processor speed (it only has a single core 600MHz processor).

Upgrading to a newer router (RT-AC1900P or RT-AC3100 highly recommended) would improve things considerably. The suggested routers have dual core 1.4GHz processors and should give you up to your ISP provided speeds over VPN 'easily'.

No it is not running as VPN Client. I just connect via my laptop to our VPN network via Junos Pulse..

Lots of hits on google about slow Junos Pulse VPN's.

What kind of laptop (os, cpu and ram) are you using?

Can you configure the RT-N66U to be the client? It should give you roughly double the speeds if it is indeed your laptop that is holding your VPN performance back (and not Junos Pulse, themselves).

It is s decent laptop with Core i5 cpu with 16 GB of RAM and running on Windows 7 64 bit. I can configre it on the router but then I do not want to go all the trafic all the time to go through the VPN. I only use it between 8:30 AM to 4 30 PM

How can I use my router as a VPN clinent. Please let me know. I would just enter my username and password in the client and donot use Junos then, Correct?

You don't need to use the VPN 'all the time'. :) It's configurable.

Do a search for yorgi's great guides here on how to setup a VPN on Asus routers.
