NAS advice

Weeb

New Around Here
Hi,

just started looking for a NAS, mainly to use as a download station.
My friend has an old NAS I helped him configure but he is only getting speeds of around 3-3,5 MB/s on torrents.

I'm looking for something that can handle torrents at at least 10MB/s.

I'm not going to have multiple devices streaming DLNA content at once so I figured I won't be needing a core i3 or some other high performance NAS. The question is what will I need?

I've looked for torrent benchmarks but can't find any.

The 2 devices I've found that are cheap and seem "decent?" are:

Seagate STBN Business Storage
ZyXEL NSA-325v2

Any recommendations?

I have no problems installing Linux or 3rd party firmware if it would help me get speed.

You are correct that we don't benchmark torrent downloading. It is too dependent on internet performance.

If you want many torrenting options, check QNAP, Thecus and Synology.

I do understand that my internet performance is a factor.
Today I have a 100/100 Mbit connection I might me upgrading to 250mbit or 500mbit but that will be a later problem.

To my PC i have no problems getting about 11-12 MB/s however since torrenting takes up quiet a few connections etc it does require a bit of cpu performance.

I've tried using the torrent client in my router (N56U) but I only get about 4MB/s and I really don't want to have my router maxed out with torrents. I'm assuming there are a few settings I could tweak etc but still I don't think I'll get up to about 10MB/s

downloading torrents at 4megs is really good. I have a 50/50 connection and hitting 4 is on the high side. Performance of the NAS will have hardly nothing to do with download speed. it is 100% dependent on internet speed, seeders, lechers, etc.
