I've been researching all different types of NAS' and have my short list but I've also been researching DAS' because it's entirely possible that a DAS would work better, or at least be part of my solution.
Like many people out there I have a large collection of movies that grows by the day. I know large might mean something different to everyone so lets say I have about 3TB of movies.
My current setup is a WHS LX195 server with 640GB internal space and 4* 500GB external drives connected to it. So usable space is about 2.4 TB on the server. I also have a Dune base 3 media player that has a 1.5TB drive installed.
There seem to be two options for storage, but the answer isn't so obvious. I could get a DAS and connect it straight to the Dune player via eSata and never have to worry about movies stuttering during playback or taxing my LAN. So the next logical question is, how do I get the movies on the DAS? Obviously I want this to not require me to physically disconnect or move devices around. Connecting a media player to a DAS seemed silly at the time so I forgot about and went back to shopping for my NAS.
After researching NAS' for awhile someone made a point to say that a NAS is not a backup solution.. sure you can recover from a disk failure and keep going but what about a total NAS failure or something catastrophic that causes you to lose all your NAS data? So that got me to thinking about how to backup NAS data and this seems the best place to bring this up.
So I would like to hear what others are doing or suggestions on what devices to get how to connect/configure them to provide both protection from disk failure, and a complete backup solution. Ideally I want a large storage device on my network (NAS) that can be configured to backup it's files to a DAS, that is connected via eSata to my Dune player. Is this possible?
