NAS, Vista and NTLMv2

Has anyone had problems connecting to their NAS using a Vista client? I generally don't use Vista, so wouldn't have a lot of experience with this.

The only data points I have is that I didn't encounter any problems mounting a share from a Vista or Vista SP1 client with the QNAP TS509 Pro or home-built NASes running Windows Home Server, FreeNAS or Ubuntu Server 8.0.4.1.

The Google articles I have found date to 2006 and 2007, so perhaps this has been fixed by NAS makers.

No issues at all on the Intel SS4200, or TS509. Group permissions, ACL issue etc. so far are zero.

I haven't seen any problems on the ReadyNAS 1100 I've had for a couple years, and my new TS-509 seems to work great with Vista too. I had to do some research because even though my NASes worked properly with Vista, my Gentoo Linux based Samba server did not, until I did some research and tweaked some of the samba settings.

Anyway, the bottom line is that the NASes I've tried worked ok.

One of the tests I've found that really places demands (compatibility demands, not performance demands) on your NAS is trying to set up a scheduled Vista backup to the NAS. Worth trying this to see how compatible your NAS is. Vista does something weird with ACLs when testing to see if the NAS is acceptable to host backups. My ReadyNAS and QNAP worked ok, but not the DroboShare.

Hi Tim,

I have not (I do not use VISTA), but there are lots of problems reported with vista and the cheap "NASes" like the one I bought 3 days ago (and already bricked).

Here some links about the problem:

Valentin,

I'm remembering now that I ran into a problem on Vista Home when trying to connect to NASes. It sounded a lot like the problem on Linux-watch in your first link.

However, it was only Vista Home and Home Premium. Vista Business and Ultimate did not have this problem. To fix it, I did a reg-hack as follows:

in the Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA you will find a value called "LmCompatibilityLevel". Double-click this value and enter the number 1.

Reboot, and Vista Home sees the NASes properly.

EDIT: Well, there I see it in one of your later links. Ah well, now the Reg entry is in this thread.
