Nest Expands Into The Smart Home Security Market

Google’s Nest just jumped into home security in a big way. Known for their home environmental products, Nest just added three products and several additional supporting pieces to their smart home line-up.

Nest Secure, shown above, is a home security starter kit that includes Nest Guard – a base that provides an alarm, keypad and motion senor; Nest Detect – a motion/open/close sensor ideal for windows and doors; and Nest Tag – a shareable key fob that can arm and disarm Nest Secure without having to use a passcode.

The Secure kit gives owners the options to add other Nest products to the system, provides multiple ways to arm and disarm through the Nest app, Nest Tag or keypad, and sends reminder alerts in case something is left unarmed. Optional battery backup and cellular backup are available as well.

Nest Hello is a HD Talk and Listen video doorbell that uses the features already existing in the Nest Cam, but in doorbell button format. It sends a visitor's snapshot with alert to the home owner. The owner can then use the Nest app to respond in real time, or send a canned recording to the visitor.

Nest Cam IQ Outdoor is weather-resistant version of Nest’s Cam IQ Indoor product.

Other announcements included a firmware update adding Google Assistant to the Nest Cam Indoor, adding smart home intelligence to the existing camera product. Nest + Yale Lock is a locking mechanism that uses Thread and Weave to let owners lock/unlock doors remotely.

To wrap all these products together, Nest is introducing Nest Connect, an accessory that connects Nest products to the Internet for remote control via the Nest App.

Finally, Nest is expanding its partnerships with other companies via the Works with Nest program. Products from Phillips, LIFX, Lutron and Chamberlain will be integrated into the Nest system to help protect and monitor the home. Examples include Chamberlain’s MyQ-enabled garage doors that send alerts if a garage door is left open, and can be closed with a tap on the phone.

Availability and pricing for each of the first three products are as follows:

• Nest Secure: Pre-orders started this week with shipping and retail availability in the U.S. starting in November. Starter pack is $499, and additional Nest Detects and Nest Tags are $59 and $25, respectively. Cellular backup is available for $5/month or $50/year.
• Nest Cam IQ Outdoor: Also available in November, Nest Cam IQ Outdoor comes in single $349 and double $598 packs.
• Nest Hello will be available in the U.S. and Canada in Q1 2018. No pricing was available.

Nest hello finally gets new version but in my opinion, there are a few differences between this doorbell and others. It is a doorbell with many features e.g. pre-recorded sun bites to talk with cold callers or facial recognition
