I am wondering if anyone can recommend the best reasonably priced ASUS Merlin compatible router that will be supported for years to come. I bought one a few years ago and it is already no longer supported, so I am looking for something that in a few years will not be the same situation.

Thanks.

Current lower priced model for Asuswrt-Merlin longer support chance is RT-BE86U. It's a new model device, will be supported by Asus for years and has Asuswrt-Merlin on 3006 firmware base available now.

At best, you can count on about 2 years out of any current tech before standards and baselines change. Sometimes you get lucky and a device will run for many years, but there are never any guarantees.

Some countries require minimum support period and Asus posted official compliance notices. In the UK this period is 4 years as an example. Asus firmware is global, this compliance notice in theory means "minimum 4 years". In reality may be longer, but also in reality "still supported" doesn't guarantee firmware updates. Asus have still supported models with 1-2 years gaps between firmware releases. Asus also updated models on EoL list after critical security issue was discovered. General advice for longer and better support - get newer and popular model.
