ASUS reveals the RT-N65U USB 3.0 Dual-Band Wireless-N750 Gigabit Router

Dedicated dual-processor design maximizes networking bandwidth for lag-free HD content streaming and multiplayer gaming

Taipei, Taiwan (June 4, 2012) ― the ASUS RT-N65U USB 3.0 dual-band wireless-N750 Gigabit router offers consumers an attractive and powerful networking device, maintaining the uniquely artistic black diamond design previously seen on ASUS routers such as the RT-N56U.
It utilizes dual processors to optimize dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz throughput, and ships with twin USB 3.0 ports to enable easy device connectivity and flexible usage as a server. Its hardware NAT further accelerates Gigabit Ethernet performance, and the entire package is made readily accessible to users via the exclusive ASUSWRT dashboard interface.

Unique dual-processor network enhancement

The RT-N65U improves network performance for smoother and more satisfying online experiences. Using a powerful yet efficient dual-processor System on a Chip (SoC) architecture, it dedicates a CPU to each of its operating bands, clocked at 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
This allows the two bands to reach their maximum throughput, unlike single-CPU designs, where compute power has to be shared. Combined, the two bands offer up to 750Mbps in bandwidth, with highly efficient resource management. Users can take advantage of the less crowded and cleaner 5GHz band for high-traffic tasks such as HD streaming and online gaming, while the standard 2.4GHz band easily handles more routine applications, including web browsing, social networking, and emailing.

Better sharing and productivity with SuperSpeed USB 3.0

ASUS includes two USB 3.0 ports on the RT-N65U, instantly turning the router into a multi-function server. Users can apply it as an FTP, Samba, UPnP AV, and printer server, making better use of resources by sharing across different devices.
The router can download content directly to USB storage with no PC required, helping users get more done simultaneously with improved multitasking and time savings. The RT-N65U is also fully DLNA-certified, and can be used as a foundation for a fast home entertainment setup.

Gigabit networking with hardware NAT

Onboard hardware NAT IP address resolution and packet control helps in achieving better Gigabit Ethernet performance, with WAN to LAN throughput two to five times greater than that provided by Gigabit routers that employ software NAT.

Power functions and easy management

As with other recent ASUS routers, the exclusive ASUSWRT dashboard interface offers streamlined setup with just a few steps, allowing users to get online quickly and hassle-free. It also provides extensive network monitoring and control, all with an intuitive graphical design that can be learned in minutes.
Client management and one-click updates are also included, alongside several ASUS applications such as VPN Server, Download Master (24-hour downloading even post-shutdown), parental controls, guest networks, and 3G connection sharing.

New Asus RT-N65U Router: General Information & ANT 0/1/2 (TX/RX)

Wow. For only $130 at Newegg that sounds like a good deal. But I'm still happy with my recent RT-N56U purchase because of the excellent custom firmware option.

I'm surprised Asus didn't put USB 3.0 ports on the RT-AC66U since they did for the RT-N65U. I suspect they wanted to rush the RT-AC66U out as soon as possible to have an AC product to compete with Netgear.

I would've guessed it was a space issue. AC being relatively new and hasn't minaturized in power and space requirements yet.

Any reviews?

I was just about to buy a 56U when I saw this badboy...should be as fast as the 56U, if not faster...

Asuswrt supports Ralink, so I expect this router to also use it, and share the exact same features (including IPv6) as the other current routers.

EDIT: based on the version info, it's indeed running Asuswrt.

thanks! Does that mean that I could use something from the Merlin asuswrt page if I want an alternative image?

https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin/downloads

She only has only the 66u and the N16 listed.

Same thing. They all share the same source code, but a firmware needs to be compiled for a specific device to be able to use it, as it needs device-specific drivers and options enabled.

I only compiled it for the RT-N66U and the RT-N16 - and I might drop that last one since supporting a device that I don't own is way to much trouble as I have no way of testing it. Plus there were only 200 downloads for that version, versus the 1700+ downloads for the RT-N66U.

Ok, thanks! Maybe it's best to go with the RT-N66U then. I wonder if the USB3 ports aren't more a marketing trick and it seems the processor is faster in the RT-N66U. Those external antennas I guess are more effective as well.

What do you think?

The RT-N66U is a better router overall IMHO.

I'm also curious to see actual benchmarks of those USB 3.0 ports.

Bought the R65U today

I'll set it up tonight and see if there ia difference to my DLink DIR-655 A1 version...too many wireless dropouts and the wireless speed is brutal off my DLink...

it seems the processor is faster in the RT-N66U

Although, slower in clock speed yes, the over speed of the 56U/65U is more due to the hardware NAT co-processor. Also, Padavan's firmware project is what truly makes the 56U shine.

I have 66U and the 56U, and the 66U-with any firmware-does not compare. Matter of fact, I went back to the 56U due to too many issues with the firmwares that do not seem like will be resolved, nor updated like Padavan does for the 56U.

The USB 3.0 has to be a separate addition and possible why the "two" processors. Both SoC's have only 2.0 USB, but with one open PCIe path not going to a radio, and due to the integrated radios in the processors, you have the ability to add something else it seems.

Merlin-
Any chance that you release a custom firmware for the n65u? I want to be able to use AiCloud and don't want to purchase a n66u just for the one feature that I need? Thanks!!
