so i was wondering if the issue with the USB 3.0 & wifi was fixed? i mean if there is new hardware version of the RT_N65U released?

I have found that it is important not to use flash drives with the 56 and 65 routers. When moderate to heavy use is being experienced it can cause the router to lose Ethernet connections due to heat. A good example is playing Battlefield 3 and having a flash drive connected for use. It is better to use a extension cable or a USB hard drive.

Personally, I have a My Book Live and use it for DNLA, storage, and such. I do not use a USB hard drive or flash connected to the router anymore, but when I tested things out that is only what I experienced (disconnects of Ethernet due to heat).
 
i'm considering this router and it's the only one router to offer usb 3, with transmission and a HDD connected to it it would be nice to leave home while the router does the dirty work instead of a 1300W power hungry PC.
 
I seem to have problem wuth the external usb drive, it was working for some time but now it just disconnects.

The drive is a Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB and router Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.342

Drive partitioned as Ext3 and checked for errors before using it 3 months ago.

Any ideas?

But the USB ports on most routers cannot achieve USB 2.0 speeds, let alone USB 3.0...you might want to consider a NAS instead.

This is a big issue not be able to use the USB3 properly - THIS IS THE ONLY ADVANTAGE IT HAS ON OTHER ROUTERS AND ITS USELESS!!

I don't think so. There are no new models in the FCC ID database. With the sample ASUS provided for review, plugging in my standard USB 3.0 test drive (Startech USB 3.0 eSATA to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station (SATDOCKU3SEF) containing a WD Velociraptor WD3000HLFS 300 GB drive) caused the 2.4 GHz client connected to the router to disconnect.

Plugging in a USB 2.0 flash drive did not disconnect the client.

I just want to say that I didn't got any problems running a usb 3.0 flash drive and wireless/wired connections at the same time. Even under heavy load of the USB 3.0 ports (tried both to verify) there wasn't a single connection loss of a wired or wireless client!

Home setup consists of
2 Desktop Pcs (both wired),
1 Desktop Pc connected to 2.4Ghz WLAN,
1 Galaxy S3 connected to 2.4Ghz WLAN,
1 Galaxy S3 connected to 5Ghz WLAN,
1 Sony Ericsson cell phone connected to 2.4Ghz WLAN,
1 Samsung Smart Tv connected to 5Ghz WLAN
1 Acer Notebook connected to 2.4Ghz WLAN,
and 1 Dell Netbook connected to 2.4Ghz WLAN.

USB 3.0 devices plugged in the ASUS rt-n65u are:
2x SanDisk Cruzer Extreme 64GB
(usually only 1 is plugged in the router but for testing I plugged in both, 1 over a USB extension cable).

I think the SanDisk USB 3.0 flash drives are making the difference here, they are not recognized as "Removable Storage" (they behave like USB Harddrives), and regardless where I plug them in and for how long, they don't even get warm!

Has Asus RT-N65U improved at all from the test results on this site? Or is RT-N56U still considered the best altrnative in it's price range?
 
I just got the RT-N65U but after about 3 days it disconnected from the ISP and so did the 5Ghz band. Since I had a RT-N66U that did the same thing every 7 to 10 days (now sold) how stable is Padavan firmware for the RT-N65U ? I am most interested in the disconnect from the ISP, if this still happens with Padavan firmware or not ? Any feedback experience appreciated.

I have the n65u for 2 days now, not sure if to hang on with it or to change it for the older n56u model.
It gets very hot, will this afect it's life time ?
The much smaller total simultaneous throughput (567 vs 1200+ on n56u) was a firmware issue ? Is this still present with latest official fw or padavan fw ?
I got this to replace a dir 868L, that one had low pppoe performance, no more than 400 mbps. I wish that smallnetbuilder do a test for pppoe throughput, many 900+ mbps rated routers can't do more than 250-400 mbps with pppoe.

I just ordered one of these RT-N65U routers. I already have two RT-N56U units with one in router mode and one in AP mode. I plan on running the RT-N65U in AP mode to offload some of my 5GHz connections. I'll run the Padavan firmware like with the N56U. So hopefully the RT-N65U will work out well for me. I have a bunch of devices using 2.4Ghz and especially 5Ghz. So I hope this will be rock solid like my RT-N56U units have been. I considered getting another one of those, but I found a price for the RT-N65U that was less on eBay.
 
Hi

I am wanting to get a router with usb3 for HDD so I can upload large files (RAW photos) while I am away from home and so that this can be achieved at a reasonable pace. I wont be doing this all that often so dont want to invest in NAS. I also cant afford a top of the range router but can get hold of an N65U super cheap.

Im aware of the problems raised but happy to experiment to get around 2.4hz drop offs.

My questions are first about usb speeds via FTP or VPN as opposed to via wifi. I dont care for the wifi option but anyone know approx speeds achievable via FTP/VPN?

Secondly, Padavan firmware looks interesting but has anyone had good success with this router via FTP or VPN with either firmware?

If anyone could also give advice on which would suit my needs better FTP or VPN that would be great. If you cant tell Im just getting into this and could do with some advice ;)
