Hi all,

First time posting and indeed flashing Merlin onto my soon to be delivered Asus RT-AC87U.

I wondered if you could give me a head start on what I will need to do and any settings that might be right for me and first time 'flashers'... that sounds bad doesn't it.

I will be connecting to a couple of laptops, phones and a gaming PC that will be wirelessly connected and will also use a Steam Link connected to the router and TV away from the PC.

I would assume it's safe to open up the router and flash .59 firmware right away? Anyway, any tips to get me up and running would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

J0shimi

my question is why do you need to install merlin before first seeing how the router works with its stock firmware , you havnt suggested you need any of the extra merlin features and to be honest its best to test the router with the stock fw to make sure there are no underlying issue with the fw before jumping over to merlin if you need it

I understand some of the features and benefits of Merlin firmware and I will of course test the router is working out of box first, however it is my understanding that if I flash the latest Asus firmware that I cannot currently revert to another firmware?

Yes you still can, but its tricky.
And i think now at first set-up out of the box, the router will try to auto-update to the last Asus Fw 380.3XXX serie.Avoid upgrade if you want to test Merlin first .

You can't move to older fw but you can move to newer including Merlin.
