New Horizons Beckoned

I'm writing this as a 'Going away, may not be back' thing.
I've been with ASUS and Merlin for... ever it seems.
Watched the builds grow into a very nice package. Learned a lot, had some odd problems, got great assistance along the way.

For the past week, I've been running OpenWrt on a NanoPi R4S. This is a great little system, lots of power.
It's quite nice. What have I gained? First, the ability to separate the radio and the router. I have less unsightly stuff in the office having moved the router and cable modem to the basement. The radio (AX86) is still there, but much smaller footprint overall.

Gained more flexibility in what I do.

Gained a very easy, fast backup and restore of all settings. I tested this by installing it and loading my full config up & running in under 2 minutes. I have a fully configured SD card sitting on the shelf just in case.

Anyway, it's been a great ride, but new things beckon.

That's a nifty looking little box.....where did you get yours? When I looked, it appeared the only sources were ship from China.

Yeah, me too! I switched like a month ago , such a powerfull tiny device that can run openwrt on! And with 4gb it means you can host a lot of stuff in the docker, like some nice Grafana monitoring tools and etc.

And when you separate your router from your wifi, your network then becomes modular! In other, words if something fail is cheaper and faster to replace, if something becomes obsolete its the same and etc.

I'm somewhat disappointed with openwrt. For a distro that old it seems very immature still in some areas. It's upgrade process is terrible.

Anyway, no worries. I think I'm happy with Asuswrt-merlin for now. I dropped a Christmas Eve donation in merlin's stocking as well.
