New Around Here
I'm not very technically inclined, but I'm trying to upgrade from an old Asus router. I plug my Ethernet cable directly In, and join my phone, laptop, and tablet on the wireless. Right now I have tried several firmware versions, and I am currently.on the latest merlin
.
Each time, no internet. Its showing a strong WiFi signal I can connect to, but no surfability. Ethernet connection has issues even joining the router page most of the time, and Windows detects a new problem ea ch time.
-Dhcp not correct
-DNS servers not responding
-In configuration is not correct
-Your computer appears to be configured correctly, but not response

I've fiddled around with changing the adapted DNS servers and forcing 192.168.1 and the subnet on the router page, but nothing has worked.
I've spend the last five hours troubleshooting and I am surrendering for tonight. If there is anything I can try, I would love to hear!

Flashing new firmware in the router won't help you solving the issue.

How is your equipment looking?
Do you have a modem, delivered by your ISP? Is that also a router or just a "naked" modem, not having DNS capabilities on board?

If you have a modem (so no router functionality on board) than switch it off.
Make sure that the Asus router is on factory default (reset the unit, see User Guide).
First power on the modem, NOT the Asus router, and wait for the modem to be ready, normally one minute.
Then connect the Asus (still switched off) to the modem, using a factory build patch cable (connect to the WAN input).
Power on the Asus.

Connect a PC or laptop by patch cable (ethernet cable) to the Asus: make sure that the computer is switched off when you do that.
Power on the PC/laptop.
When ready, open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1
Do the steps.....

If you have a modem/router from your ISP than you need
- OR your Asus in Access Point mode
- OR your Asus in Router mode but than your internal address of your Asus has to fit in the DNS range of your ISP modem/router AND your ISP modem/router needs to have your Asus router IP-address in DMZ: rather complex for you not being techy .....: Go for Access Point (AP) mode.

No modem from ISP, my router is functioning as the 'isp modem' and router. I am not sure about DNS capabilities on board. Just the Asus router here, I have tried the other steps but will contact ISP and try to get the dns range from them, the DNS errors are by far the most frequent so that seems like it may be a good solution to try out. Thank you for the response.

That has a simple fix:
On your router, under Wan, select "no" to "Connecto to DNS server ..." and in the next 2 boxes configure Google DNSs: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Then, on LAN section, under "DHCP Server" make sure "Yes" is selected to "Enable DHCP Server".

That will make Asus to be DNS server for all your LAN/wireless clients. And Asus will resolve names using Google's servers.

There are a couple of commands that may help you troubleshoot and identify the problem, just let me know if you have Linux/Windows/Mac and which one you are comfortable running commands in CLI.

thank you for all the help everyone, I was eventually able to get it fixed with a simple call to the ISP when all else failed. They requested my MAC address and somehow were able to 'turn it on' on my new router. Frustrating how I wasted so much time on trying various things, it turns out they had service disruption and a backlog afterwards which is why they were so slow to accept support requests. I really appreciate the help. This will help anyone searching for similar terms I hope, and the suggestions in here are good to try for certain.
