New RT-AC68U & Synology DS213 Not Detected on USB3 help needed

markee

New Around Here
Trying to connect my Synology DS213 to a New RT-AC68U under USB 3 and I can't seem to get the RT-AC68U to even see the usb3.
I've tried firmware 3.0.0.4.374.4887 , 3.0.0.4.374.4561 and Merlin - build 3.0.0.4.374.34 also tried 3 different usb3 cables none will detect or even show up the the AC68U under usb 2 or 3. When I plug a flash drive into the router it lights up and detects no problem but when i plug in a cables nothing no light up no detect as if theirs nothing connected. Running windows 8.1 all latest updates

Any suggestions please ????

A true NAS like yours has USB ports to do a backup to - not to provide access to the disks inside. It is working as designed.

The router and the NAS are both USB hosts. You can only connect a device to a host (such as a disk or a printer), not another host.

Thanks for the quick reply's clearing that up for me

Wondering now that i have 3 usb3 cables kicking around I'm not using could i connect my PC's USB3 to the Synology's USB3 would that work? wouldn't i benefit from added speed of usb 3 over networks gigabit?

Hi,
I wonder how one would think to use true NAS box connected to a USB port??????
Could you please tell us, what you are trying to do? You want to use USB3 cable?
then plug it into nas usb3 port and attach a usb3 hdd enclosure or whatever. If you don't have
LAN port available on your router for NAS box, you can use switch to expand LAN ports..

I was wondering the same thing what to do with the usb3 now that i have 3 new unused USB3.0 cables a Synology NAS and a new AC68U but no devices to host like printer or hd-eclosure nothing to hookup to all those unused usb3 ports on back the nas and router ??

I do have a network switch and good with LAN ports everything is all hooked up and working network wise

Just wanted to take advantage of the added speed of USB3 vs lan speeds for transferring large files is all ??

All that would possibly allow is to perform a backup from the NAS to your PC. And even then I'm not sure it would work.

Again; you cannot establish a connection to the disks inside with the USB cables; they are solely for backing up the contents of the NAS to an external disk drive (in a USB enclosure; not a in a PC).

You can sell the cables, buy an external enclosure to perform such backups (recommended) or simply put them in a drawer or give them away, but you can't use them to connect another device to the contents of the NAS' disks.

The reason for the USB ports on the Diskstation are so that you could attach an external drive to the Diskstation. Or a printer, or some other device. You cannot use the Diskstation like a flash drive that you plug into the router or into the computer. Think of the Diskstation as a specialized computer - just as you don't attach two laptops with a USB cable, you wouldn't connect the Diskstation to a computer with a USB cable. The way the Diskstation interacts with the computer is over the network, and it doesn't really interact with the router at all - if you wanted basic NAS with the router, you would plug in an external drive to its USB port.

In the cable draw they will go to hangout waiting for the big day when they might be used No need for a external enclosure at this point that what the Synology is for

Thanks thats a good explanation you got me straight

Just bought this Synology DS213 off Craigs list came with 2 - 2TB WD Red drives for $300 total
Then I went and updated my 4 -5 yr old old D-link Router with a AC68U

I'm backing up my bizness client database files and I'm also off loading my Windows 8.1 File-history files then next I'm going to sort out maybe 15- 20 yrs of file clutter and get it off my home and office PC's

I just got this about a week ago its my first NAS setup so still trying to figure out how things work the new Synology DiskStation 5.0 is a like a OS in its self with tons of features.

I'm pretty good at building computers and trouble shooting windows install issues but when it comes to networking and router settings its like a foreign language to me I'm struggling to figure out how everything works

I had no real problems formatting and installing raid 1 to the 2 drives got the drives mapped and working on my network with no real problems.

But what I'm having problems with are?

1. I haven't been able to get Synology Cloud Station and Cloud Sync working off the nas

2. I'm trying to install a bluetooth dongle on the nas usb so I could sync my Galaxy S3 direct to the nas but the Synology doesn't seem to want to detect it I've tried 2 different dongles USB2 and USB3 both no go?

Asus Aicoud works fine no problems

Any advice would be welcome here I'm stuck at this point

I can't comment on the Synology software, but my backup question was in regards to backing up the data on the NAS.

Even with RAID1, you do not have a backup solution.

Consider getting an external drive or two and rotate the backups of the NAS data to a different physical location.

Then, you may be safe (data wise), from at least certain types of mechanical failures, user mistakes and acts of God (fire, flood) and theft. ;)

Hope someone will jump in and give you the proper advice to setup the Synology features you're interested in.

I doubt you'll be able to accomplish #2 because the necessary software probably hasn't been developed in Linux for the Diskstation.

As for #1, you should check the Synology forums. There are tons of useful posts out there. I haven't tried the cloud station on mine, so I can't help, but the other applications I use, such as FTP and VPN were easy to get going.

Does it make sense to grab this as a second backup pretty nice deal

Personally I'm a fan of QNap's products. Sold and installed quite a few, ranging from the TS-212 up to the TS-669-Pro.

The best is having two of them, if your goal is to have a backup. They can be configured so one will automatically backup the other one. Maybe Synology offers a similar feature? If so, it would make more sense to get a second Synology.

Yep. It's a basic feature for Synology and works absolutely well in my case, for years.
The "biggest" problem is to have a big upload speed and no cap. Both are not that common for Docsis connections.
