I've no experience but I've been considering the Asus AC86U (AC2900) for my next purchase. (If that one makes you grumpy too then it'd save me some money : -)

You'll have to elaborate on your specific needs, because chosing a router has to be based on these.

If you're looking for something robust and powerful that Merlin supports I'd say RT-AC5300.

You can likely get much better QoS implementation out of that with Merlin firmware and FreshJRs QoS script than you'd get out of the GT-AC5300.

Had the RT-AC5300 and after a period it causing some issues with dropping the WIFI. It was the CPU that was MAX out. Then I bought the GT RT-AC5300 and have had that for 1 month now and it's awesome. Max CPU has been 10% and the "old" RT-AC5300 is now working as a AP, and it love it
