Just had Xfinity come out and install their gigibit service. Tech told me I can't get Gigabit speeds with my new Apple AirPort Extreme router. Installed a netgear one, R8000 instead. Any truth to this? Would like to keep using my Apple router

Maybe @sfx2000 could chime in

Try both and see. ;)

Got about 450 Mbps wirelessly on my iMac with the Nighthawk.
With the airport extreme, about 380 Mbps.

If I hardwire the imac, around 900 Mbps

900Mbps on both?

Is the 70Mbps (wireless throughput) important to you? The NG is about 20% faster (more than enough for me to not use the AE).

Hardwired - iMac to the modem - his previous numbers were thru the routers I would guess...

Which makes sense...

Doing some playing around here.
Nighthawk R8000 today gives me 404 Mbps, with a peak of 423.31 Mbps
I unplugged that, and threw in the Airport Extreme Gen6, using same 5ghz wifi channel as the Nighthawk (149) and I get 356 Mbps, with a peak of 389 Mbps. Strange. So looks like if I keep the Airport Extreme, I'm sacrificing a small amount speed

Maybe this is why

As the review on this website shows a big speed bump http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wire...8000-nighthawk-x6-first-look?showall=&start=3

WAN to LAN is more what I think I'm after, and yes all those models are much better than the Extreme and close to Gigabit speeds it would seem

In most cases, you won't see that much of a difference in the real world.

Play around with things, and see what works best for you. Could be the R8000, could be the APEX AC...
