New Around Here
Hi!

I'm looking for a NAS sometime in the not too far future... my requirements are mostly geared towards features than towards performance. Also, one main concern is noise level. The NAS will most likely end up in my bedroom, so it should be as quiet as possible.

Unfortuneately, no comparable information of noise level is available. It would be awesome, if this could be added to the NAS charts. Interesting values would be noise level at startup, during normal operation and while idle.

Obviously, given the size of the NAS database, it would be asking to much, to add these number for all tested NAS. But it would be great if it could be done for the future and for the best within each peer-group...

Anyway, having said that, a big thank you to the smallnetbuilder folks for all the thorough testing you do. It's always my first place too look before buying new hardware.

Good suggestion. We don't measure noise with a sound meter, since it is difficult to relate to the acutal listening experience. But I can add a field for the subjective noise observations that we make.

Thank you!

That should be sufficient.

Also, once a soundmeter is involved, one really needs to take care of eliminating all other sound sourced, making the test quite a hassle.

Looking forward to it...

I think with a DB tester you can probably do a good job of testing. The only thing I think you would need for a constant are the same drives so there noise doesn't vary.
