Hi as title says I need help with ASUS RT-N66U & Print Server Connection.

I have spent a better part of the day researching in futile on how to connect my Brother 7840W via ethernet to the ASUS router.

Have no problems connecting it wirelessly to the router via Brother's auto config software but we would like to use the ASUS as a print server so people can print without being tied to a PC.

I basically hooked the Brother into one of the LAN port on the back of the ASUS but after that I cannot see the printer (offline - since it's no longer on Wireless).

Am not sure if I have to do something with the IP address or subnet etc. on either the ASUS or the Brother.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Paula.

Most printers will do one of the other, but not both
Your probably have to change something on the printer

http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Network%20Users%20Manual/NUM_MFC_7840W_EN_3016.pdf

According to the manual:
On page 10
You can use the Brother software to setup the lan port on the printer
Or
You can use the control panel on the printer
Go to page 72 (Section 6 Control panel setup)
for the "choose BOOT Method" choose "Auto" for dhcp from asus

Thanks for chiming in.

I finally got it to work. Not really sure what sequence finally allowed it to work but basically what I did was:

1) Attached the ethernet cable from Brother printer to the ASUS RT-N66U & turned on DHCP under the ASUS's LAN option
2) Went into the printer's Control panel setup & enabled LAN & disabled WLAN.
3) Also chose "BOOT Method" & "Auto" for dhcp (per your suggestion!)
4) Ran the Brother Software & selected ethernet setup & it did its thing including rebooting the PC.
5) Printed out the network settings from the printer's screen to get the printer IP Address & BIOS Name.
6) Went into the ASUS web configuration manager & under LAN>DHCP> added the printer's IP Address manually from step 3.
7) The port where the ethernet was hooked up to lit up on the ASUS (FINALLY!)
8) Rebooted the printer.
9) Went into device and printer on the PC & test printed from properties of the newly installed printer & it worked as advertised.

From what I gathered before, I basically didn't turn on DHCP on the ASUS, didn't know that the printer's IP Address was provided once I activated DHCP on the ASUS & didn't know I had to manually add the Printer's IP address to the ASUS Router.

Anyhow, I appreciate the nudge in the right direction phibertron!

I would suggest you setup the router with some specifics.
The router generally will take the 192.168.1.1 address. DHCP will take a range, not sure what the defaults are in ASUS. I would set the DHCP range to be say 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199. This will leave the range of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.99 and 192.168.1.200 to 192.168.1.254 for static addressing.
Personally I put my static devices like servers, printers, PVR's and such on the lower range and my networking add on's like access points on that upper range. Then you use the brother software to connect and change it's setting from dhcp to static and give it an IP in that first range.

Hi fistv:

1) ASUS default DHCP range is 192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.254
2) Brother automatically chose my IP address during the setup - it was towards the higher end of the ASUS DHCP range.
3) Currently I have the BOOT Method on the Brother as Auto vs. Static (as you suggested)
4) Everything is working as expected except I cannot see the printer on the available wireless network list from any other mobiles, tablet or laptop. My PC can see the printer per the Brother printer monitoring software but not in the wireless available list.

Any suggestions on how to make my printer available for every1 on my network to see?

Stick the brother cd in the laptop and run the installation, it has a 'find my printer' option on the second or third page. Then just do a normal printer install. As for a droid, not sure, on most linux type os's I use cups, http://localhost:631. On the dozen plus macs we have I just add the printer, ip address and go, pulls the drivers down from apple. That is the main reason I prefer static IP's for those devices I mentioned, unless you have that address and the mac on the printer reserved on the router it could get a different IP address if the router reboots and then you have to do it all over. Long term easier static.

hi. i didn't want to start a similar thread so hopefully someone can help me with this.

i just recently installed an ASUS RT-N66U and tried to use the Print Server Connection for a Brother MFC-7220 (USB). Everything appeared to have installed fine and the printer prints, but if i leave and come back later, the router cannot see the printer unless i reboot the ASUS. What did I do wrong?

(ps: i am a total noob at this and big technical words go right over my head so i need the "routers for dummies" answer format thx)

I know--super old thread, but I have a solution for this that I found in another thread here for an HP printer.

Basically, you need to use the LPR option on the Asus and create an LPR profile on the computer as per these instructions:
https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/114024/

Then there won't be any issues. Hope this helps someone! I know it would have helped me!
