I have 2 RT-AC87U's I updated the firmware on both and reset the router. After about 5 minutes the GUI stops responding, but internet still works and I'm able to telnet into the routers. I reboot them both, 5 minutes later same thing happens. I go to the GUI, it takes me to the login page, enter my info and goes to a blank screen. Thinking that the file was bad I downloaded the firmware again and started over fresh, same thing happens. Anyone else having this issue? I contacted Asus support and they asked why would you update the firmware lol. My response was why publish firmware if you don't want users updating their hardware. I was connected to a "2nd" level tech and he said the firmware was going to get pulled, don't know how true that is but I figured I would share.

i also have 2 87u and have no problem with gui

Agreed. After making a change and it refreshes I can no longer access the config. Wifi/hard wired appears to still work.

I emailed Asus today regarding this issue, waiting on a response.

Apple devices have been a unreliable headache for a lot of wireless admins. I'm a sys admin at a university. The recent ios9 release was another fine example of how apple released yet another buggy update that broke wireless across many enterprise networks. Of course they will never admit it and just expect the vendors to work around their issues. In my case it was a meru network and we had to patch out ap's in order for ios9 to be reliable. Something to do with the beacon. But yet if course the apple users blame Meru..... not their lousy update. Had the same issues with a cisco network we support as well. Anyways my point being....Apple always has had its own quirks and unreliability. Maybe asus is not to blame here.

Hey everyone,

So my RT-AC87U started acted up a few days ago, and I noticed my 5Ghz was dropping a lot upstairs. I went ahead and factory reset and then switch from Merlin's last FW to the latest ASUS release, 9177.

Now, if I'm within 20-30 feet, my 5Ghz speeds are fantastic and my iPhone can get 150-160Mbps to the Speedtest site. However, once I get to the second and third floors, there is so much latency and packet drop that it no longer is functional. What is really odd, is up on the third floor, the 2.4Ghz signal is stronger than the 5Ghz signal, which is the opposite of what it should be correct?

Is it possible the unit just got to warm?

I've opened a ticket with ASUS. I really have loved this router the last 8 months I have had it. Just wish I could get my AC speeds back to where they were.

*EDIT*

So I ran a speedtest from my MacBook Pro. From the same location, my 2.4Ghz speeds blew away the 5.0Ghz speeds. I'm starting to think it's time for a router RMA? How is Asus about that, will they force me to send the old one in first?

5Ghz Speedtest

.66Mbps down

.72Mbps Up

2.4Ghz Speedtest

79.82Mbps down

58.43Mbps up

No, that's not correct. The 2.4GHz signal will be stronger. Looks like you are just out of range on the 5GHz band.

As the others have said, this is to be expected. In fact you have 2 things working against you: 5Ghz travels shorter distances than 2.4Ghz, that is to be expected. But also, the antennas radiate their output in a doughnut shape - more power in the horizontal plane, less in the vertical. Trying to go up 2 or even 3 floors is going to be tricky. Really you probably need a 2nd Access Point on the 2nd or 3rd floor, hard-wired to the router, but if that is not possible here are a couple of ideas.

1. You could try turning the outer 2 antennas so they stick out horizontally from the router (90 degrees to the ones in the middle). This will push the signal vertically and should help.

2. If still 5Ghz is not good enough and your devices are not switching automatically to 2.4Ghz you can turn on "Roaming Assist" in the 5Ghz "Professional" wireless settings, to force devices to move to 2.4Ghz.

Hi,

I'm new to the forums and to Asus routers. Recently bought a RT-AC87U and upgraded the firmware to 9177. I have a question related to Traffic Analyzer option. Is there a way to reset the values shown without reset all router to factory settings? I was in the understanding that everytime you reset the router the info collected so far is lost but is not the case. At least with this latest firmware.

About this firmware for me is stable so far. No problem with Apple devices (iphone 6, ipad air 2, macbook pro).

Regards.

You will need to enable SSH access for this.

1) Disable Traffic Analyzer
2) Enable SSH
3) Connect to the router using WinSCP
4) Go into /jffs/ directory and delete traffid.db
5) Re-enable Traffic Analyzer

Hi RMerlin,

When to expect your firmware based on this one? Thanks!

Hi RMerlin,

The standing official answer to that tiring question is 'soon'.

And more specifically; it will be released when it is released.

(RMerlin doesn't need the constant whine of 'when, when when').

Does anyone know if this new firmware supports sky broadband which uses MER authentication?

I currently use merlin 378.55 as this supports MER, but would be nice to upgrade to this new firmware.

Finally a new one! :)

went from .55 Merlin to this and when i just tried out .55 Merlin i forgot to enable NAT/HW Acceleration and created a thread about it earlier. now i've checked and it's on! ^^

now on a clean update to .9177 i'm on speeds that should be way way higher... on .55 Merlins i had 950mbit/s+ down/upand now i'm around 350mbit/s/500mbit/s.

anyone else experience this?

Questions related to my firmware do not belong in this topic.

It's on .9177 and not yours. But thank you for your reply m8.

I wasn't replying to you, but to the 2-3 other persons in the thread that were asking questions about my firmware.
