seems they make the chips for the android phones as well.
is it really the routers fault?
only androids are affected which have same chipset?
why dont other phones or devices have this problem?
don't just blame one company.

I wouldn't get rid of a router like that for such a small inconvenience that has quick fix by switching to 2.4
I understand its frustrating when you pay for a router that has problems
but the great things it does out way the flaws

How come other routers much cheaper doesnt have this "small inconvenience" if they had put a sticker outside of the box saying "This device 5G band is incompatible with android phones" i really wouldnt mind and i would take the blame for buying it cause i already knew it.So its like...if you buy a car advertized to have 200Hp after you buy it you find out that the real horsepower is 20 horses and you cant put your friends in cause the 20 horses will become 5 horses from the weight its ok cause the car still moves doesnt matter how fast but it still moves and it got all comforts like ac,airbags,ABS,ASR,EBD,ESP etc....i guess you wouldnt return the car back and you still be happy with it.Right?

I've already try stock 9460 and with my configuration I have a lot of problems. I prefer to stay on Merlin wich is more stable. But issue of 5ghz and battery drains doesn't come from merlin firmware it comes from quantenna chipset and this is not android issue. I've already have n66 and my devices on 5ghz works great.

But I challenge you to do a search on google for android phones and battery problems and you will see that there are tons of people having the same issue.
Is Asus to blame for them too? or do all these people have a U87?

What I am trying to say is stop bashing a company because you are having a problem that could be related to so many other issues.

I doubt it. This 5ghz battery issue is more then just blaming quad antennas or broadcom or even ASUS

Like I said I have the 87U and I run devices that need 5ghz like a surface which I often transfer big files via wifi
but for a phone? seriously why even bother wasting your precious energy when you don't even need the extra 20 HP
5ghz is rock solid for my needs

For anyone who bought or is planning on buying a U87 router i give them all a 2 thumbs up

Such a liar!!!! I had every divices on this router and nothing works! Doesnt matter andriod or ios! Both lagging like crazy! Some firmware worked for couple days and back to shirtty lagging! Even just a small games on my iphone!

Ps: 5ghz only tho

Let's all remember that every environment is different, made up of a mix of clients, and with this router some environments will work fine while others will experience endless issues.

Personally, I have thrown in the towel when it comes to this router and currently have a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite on order which should be arriving in the next day or two to replace the RT-AC87U. It will still serve as an AP for now until I pick up a PoE switch and a UniFi AC AP as well to pair the ERL with. Hopefully I'll have better luck there.

And I would bet against that.

To clarify; Asus hasn't abandoned anyone; Quantenna has. Asus is doing everything in their power to deliver what Quantenna promised them about their chipset.

Whether a proper solution will be reached is anybody's guess. But I would not be blaming Asus for the continued issues. Neither would I be using a router that wasn't fit to task for so long either.

I disagree, while the issues mainly revolve around the Quantenna chipset at the end of the day it still has Asus branding on the router, it is still sold and marketed by Asus and it is supported by them. They chose a new, unproven chipset in their design and this is the end result. I think Asus does share in at least some of the blame here.

And from my point of view, they've done and are continuing to do much more than any other manufacturer that was cursed with the Quantenna chipset. In other words, they've gone above and beyond my reasonable expectations (and are continuing to do so).

While it may be nice for Asus to offer a free (different) router for RT-AC87U owners, that is more than wishful thinking. The majority are using the product with no issues and offering a new router to them (which many will take Asus up on) will be an unnecessary cost to keep a few 'happy' that are genuinely having issues.

I'm agree with you, ASUS should do something with this router, if they think that the problem is software to resolve it. Or if it's hardware problem just to say SORRY and to replace the router with other equivalent model.

I'm still keeping the router just because i can't give 200 EUR in every 3 months for routers, but if ASUS can not do anytihng this is a scam and i will forget this brand.

After so long i replaced it and currently have a $300 dollar paper weight. I am however holding out for them to fix the thing so i can actually sell it and recoup some money back for it. It already has a stigma with anyone that would buy a router of this class.

I bought a dual band router for a reason to use both bands. What i got was a router that worked well as a 2.4 ghz and turn off the 5 ghz cause its was mostly useless. So i refuse to toss it in the trash or give it away. ASUS is far more concerned with selling the next best thing and it has been 1.5 years they been trying to fix the mess with months in between updates but there seems to be no end in sight.

The router is advertised to do things it does not. You sell a product and claim it does certain things and it fails to do so then you have false advertising and class action lawsuits to face. It doesn't get any simpler than that. 1.5 years is long enough.

Thats why I sold mine and moved to the Netgear R8500 with MIMO activated.
Rock solid. The RT87 is done, I also had the Android problems on the 5 ghz channel.
On the R8500 its perfect.
