Opening ports on WRT1900AC

Hi,

I am dealing with a Minolta multi function printer scanner that needs to send a scan to a user or email. The technician told me we need to open the ports: 25, 465 and 587. The 25 and 465 are regular email ports but when I do a port scan they seem to be closed. Despite that email is working just fine

I am unfamiliar with the UI for the WRT1900AC and cant find the firewall or other places where to change port settings. I have searched in the manual to no avail.

This router is connected to a Comcast Business class modem/router. I have created a DMZ on this device so I can have the Link-sys manage the network.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Assuming you're logged into the router: "Security" (bottom of the left-side menu) > "Apps and Gaming" (tab) > then choose either of the blue links below: "Single Port Forwarding" or "Port Range Forwarding", depending on what you need to do. So others can follow along, here's a link to the WRT1900AC firmware sim.

Side note: a slick interface, but some of their terms (obviously from this post) are indeed misleading as to where to find stuff. Could definitely use some work to make it more industry-standard, yet still keep it novice-friendly.

Those ports need to be open (outbound), not forwarded (inbound). They already are open, as the router does not block any outbound ports

Only if the Comcast router\modem isn't set to bridging mode.

The SMTP settings are for Gmail.
Any other device can send and receive gmail from the same network but this machine cant get trough..

Following up on chadster's suggestion, if you don't need any specific routing-related features of the unit, I would put the Comcast modem/router into bridge/pass-through mode (turning it into a modem only) if it isn't set that way yet, so that the WRT1900AC is the only device doing any routing, NAT or firewalling on the network. It's the simplest way to ensure port-forwarding works reliably and network address translation (NAT) is only happening once.

As for the SMTP settings (per this Google support article), port 25 is not offered, nor is it a wise choice in general, as most ISPs block its use outright (which is why Google doesn't bother to offer it). So we're left with port 587 using TLS or 465 over SSL. If the printer settings support it, I would choose 465 with SSL encryption, otherwise 587. Make sure you appropriately specify the authentication/sign-in settings in the printer settings dialogues/fields, and it should work.

To my knowledge I cant be done, thats why I created a DMZ on the modem and connected to that...

I might be a bit off topic here.

Before I went ahead with adjusting the Firewall settings I bypassed the router and connected the Minolta Multi function machine directly to the Comcast modem/router.

The SMPT settings in the machine are Gmail with ports 465 and 587 (SSL) with known good credentials.

Still we cant email scans from this machine and it only provides "error" without any further details.

Confused this we can email from any other computer on this network using the exact same SMTP settings.

The Minolta technician tells me I should open the ports but they are open as we can email right????

What am I missing here?
