Ok, got Asuswrt-Merlin flashed this morn, and have the Client1 VPN set up to access my VPN service - works. Showing the appropriate IP with whatsmyip.org, etc. when connected.

Now, the questions:

  1. What's best config to shutdown outbound net traffic if VPN goes down?
  2. I am also using Asus' dynamic DNS service (asuscomm.com) - and that still forwards to my ISP's assigned IP. I have NOT rebooted the RT-N66U yet - is that why? Or will that always point to my ISP's IP address, regardless of VPN client status on the router?
  3. I'd also like to change the inbound PPTP VPN server I had previously setup (for my laptop, etc.), using OpenVPN - having difficulty finding a guide for this. Mostly, I'm needing more what certs should be generated, etc. (I won't have a "real" CA, etc.) - and oh - I'm on a Mac, so most of the software I run into that talks about generating certs is Windoze oriented. :) If someone can point to something that can run under OSX (openssl at the terminal, and do the same basic stuff you'd do for an apache server under Linux?)

Follow the guide on my Wiki for generating the certs using easy-rsa. Easy-RSA is also included in the firmware, so you can use it from the router itself (explained in the Easy-RSA page of the Wiki).

Which VPN Service did you connect to ?
I have been unable to get traffic to Hidemyass !

VPN Privacy

The real function of a VPN is to secure private data transmitted over a public network. As a side benefit a VPN will allow users to avoid casual attempts of geo blocking and VPNs do provide a small bit of anonymity.

Everyone using a VPN should read its terms of service. Most if not all VPN providers with a US presence maintain logs and will give them up if requested by law enforcement. There are non US based VPN providers that claim they don't keep records and will pull up stakes and relocate their servers if they receive a request for information.

If you truly want to truly be anonymous on the Internet then use a burner PC when connecting to WiFi at public access points.

+10 ...........

I realize this is an old thread, but I have the same issue with my n66u and privateinternetaccess. OpenVPN client on the router is configured to start automatically. But my WAN IP always shows my actual public IP from the cable modem. From within the network, whatismyip dot com reports the IP as one from privateinternetaccess in the USA, which is as expected.

But from outside the network, I can no longer connect to my router, or attached hard drive once the openvpn client is enabled on the router...

Is there not a OPENVPNCLIENT_IP >> WAN_IP command I can run? LOL.

Basically you should try 'Selective routing'......
