I am totally broken up by this mess of package versions of Asterisk. For example, we have THREE different sets of packages with same index: in 2015, in 2014 and in 2012. And all they are 1.8.XXX.
WTF? What should I use then?

What should I use then?

This may shed some light. There are multiple supported "feature frozen" versions of Asterisk.

The 1.x versions are no longer supported. No security updates.
