ok i disabled the firewall momentarily and found that the upload speed is 1.5mbps? this is not good i had a similar issue when running one of the first firmwares on the Asus and the stock router was faster by miles.

anyone else getting poor upload speeds?

Not at all, this custom firmware makes the router fly!!!! It doesn't even slow down after 24 hours which was an issue with all my routers, I always had to do a reboot. Did you try and restore back to factory default? Also have you tried a speed test with just the modem? Are you on wireless or wired?

On speedtest.net I've always had issues with upload speeds. It seems like it maxes out around 50 to 55Mb/s upload speeds for all the servers in my area. My max upload speed is 70Mb/s and my download is 155Mb/s. I can only find one site to get me close to my max download speed. I'll hit 150Mb/s with that.

When I try the speed test from Verizon I have no issue with any of my speeds.

speedtest.net work's fine for me but pingtest.net don't. The packet loss test always fails.

Wifi Drop

Hi,

I just installed the latest Padavan firmware to my RT-N56u router and so far everything works as except except I'm having the below issue:

My wifi signal was dropping after certain period of time and when this happened, I need to turn off my wifi (from my MBP) and then turn it on again.

I believe this is something not normal, right? I appreciate if any help/advice in advance :)

PS: Prior to updating to this custom firmware, I did not face any wifi drop on the ASUS stock firmware.

Thanks.

I have just installed their new 3.0.3.0-026 firmware with the new look, and also managed to follow the Wiki to get entware installed.

Now, the question is, which media server should I use? Minidlna, xUPnPd?

EDIT: Ok, I installed Minidlna and set the .conf file to point to my Videos folder and started it. No error messages, but my PS3 cannot see the media server. The wiki ends here... how can I find what's wrong?

EDIT: So I stopped the Minidlna and installed XUPnPd instead and started that... the PS3 sees something called "IPTV" (which only contains an empty playlist folder) and I can access the web interface, but no idea how to proceed from there...

EDIT: Ok, I stopped them both because I discovered that there already is a media server option in this firmware, even though I am very certain that I read that they had removed it for the latest versions... I started that and sure enough, it appears. However, the folders are a complete mess! Why are there "browse", "all video" and "folders" folders? What purpose do they serve? I selected my Video folder in the config, and that's what I expect to see, nothing else.... this is messy. :(

EDIT: With the built in media server, even forcing a full database update seems to randomly stop after just a few files (and it's just sooooo slow)... can anything be done about this?

I haven't had any luck with padavans firmware and ps3....If you read the "Issues" on the wiki page, you'll see alot of others have issues with dlna errors and the ps3....sometimes the drive shows up, sometimes it doesnt, sometimes if you wait 10 minutes, it shows the files correctly, then you can turn it off and back on and the drive doesn't show up....Sometime fastforward or rewind doesnt really work until you let the movie play a little bit into it.
Bottom line unless someone comes forward with how they got it to work with ps3, i've tried every version of padavans and only one worked well, 1.0.1.8e-p2, but since then I haven't had good luck with his firmware and ps3....Wish it would get straightened out because thats what keeps me from running it...
Good luck and if you figure something out, let the rest of us know...
Thanks.

Well, my Philips TV has dlna support, but that still doesn't answer why the built-in media server in this firmware randomly stops creating its database after only a few files...

Has anyone gotten the entware version to work better, or any entware media server?

I have tried both full version with built in minidlna, and the mini version without it and have install the optware way with everything that you can and still have intermintant success....my ps3 works fine with stock and wrt, but for some reason padavans always gives me DLNA 2104 errors. It doesnt affect any of my pcs or my 360, those all work fine with streaming, just not my ps3...

I wish I had more to offer, but its been a logged issue with no real response from the creator and havent seen anything related to resolving this issue with ps3 in any of the log changes.

Thank you again for your reply, but if you read my revised post above more carefully, you'd notice that I removed the PS3 from the equation, and I still have severe issues... ;)

But:

1. From your posts, I'm guessing you have no trouble rebuilding the database of the built-in media server?
2. You also seem to have had no issues with other devices detecting the entware installed minidlna server?

I have both of those problems, even if I don't involve a PS3 in any way. :)

EDIT: Well, seems that my Mac Mini is randomly losing it's internet connection (but not LAN connection) with this Padavan firmware. That did not happen with stock Asus firmware (and still doesn't happen with my other Macbook Pro or PC using Padavan). But unless I can find a solution for the Mini, this alternative firmware experiment might just have come to a very early end...

I sometimes can get the database, sometimes I can't even see the drive....
I know with the netgear I had a while back.....If you started up any device that access the usb drive connected to the router, during the queing of the files, it would hault any more files from being logged with the ps3....You might want to try and turn off all devices....unplug the router and plug back in....watch the light on your usb drive as it ques, and dont try to access it until its done blinking...then see try and access it. (like I said this was a netgear workaround issue, but might work with the asus and minidlna)

As far as optware additions , I saw no difference in the performance from the full version with minidlna added vs the optware addition route.

Here is a trick that I found that improves miniDLNA reliability, you want the database and all the cached files to be on an ext3 formatted drive.

You need a small thumb drive (a cheap "dollar" drive will work just fine) along with your "big" external USB drive (yes the "big" drive can remain being NTFS).

1. Format the thumb drive as ext3 (You can do this on the router, or I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
2. Turn off UPnP Media Server
3. Unmount all drives
4. Reboot the router
5. Insert the thumb drive in the "Top" USB port
6. Turn on UPnP Media Server
7. Insert the "big" drive in the "Bottom" USB port
8. Make note of the "big" drive name (example: AiDisk_b1)
9. Configure UPnP Media Server appropriately (example)

V,/media/AiDisk_b1/dlna/Video
P,/media/AiDisk_b1/dlna/Pictures
A,/media/AiDisk_b1/dlna/Music
Update for new files only
10. Wait awhile, depending on how big your collection is. You can watch the progress via http://192.168.1.1:8200/ (hit the browser refresh button repeatedly till the count doesn't change)

The big things is that you need to turn on UPnP after you mount the small thumb drive, but before you mount your collection so miniDLNA puts all house keeping files on the small thumb drive.

I can't believe how well this has worked. My NTFS drive is no longer being corrupted (I can remove the drive and connect it to my computer and it no longer says that it needs to run a chkdsk every time), I can play all my files from all my devices, and when I remove/add files miniDLNA keeps up.

Only once have I had to "force update whole database". I had copied up a corrupted .MP4 file, tried to play it on my TV and things went weird. I deleted the file, redid the MP4 file and copied it back up. The file showed up twice in my listings. That's when I forced the update.

FYI, here is my miniDLNA count: ;)
Audio files: 2817
Video files: 146
Image files: 0

Well, I already gave up. It was simply too much trouble, for an apparently very bare bones dlna implementation (I use PS3 Media Server on my Mac Mini which works 95% of the time... some files it refuses to play on the PS3 with it, but then, oddly my Philips TV's media client can play them instead).

However, I'm curious about one thing... you say that I should format in ext3 (which I did) but then you go on to talk about ntfs. Why is that?

EDIT: Also, Mac Mini wireless disconnection issue update: I now switched OFF the entware and USB support, and so far have had no disconnections. When the entware and USB was on, it was impossible to copy anything from the Mac Mini to the disk attached to the N56-U, because it almost immediately killed its connection (while still displaying a seemingly healthy signal in the menu bar).

A lot of us prefer to keep our collection on NTFS drives, as we don't run Linux everywhere. I found that putting the miniDLNA on a separate, ext3 drive things worked better.

Also, I thought there was a special config setting for PS3? I can't find it now because I'm on my phone right now.

OK, so I installed the VLAN version, so far I have not found any way of configuring VLAN via the web interface so I will need to troll through all of the available commands via telnet/ssh and see what is there.

More comments to follow...
Having gone through all of the system commands, everything I need is there so now I will have to configure via command line.

One question I do have: how do I make my changes permanent? I am used to debian linux and in the Asus the file structure is different.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

TIA

I'm having the same issue. Connection will just drop out randomly on my macbooks.

differences?

hey, I am wondering after a few of padavan's recent build. I wanna know what are the differences between the regular 3.0.3.1-027 vs 3.0.3.1v-27.
I read the description, but I don't really understand it.
