Hi Guys,

me and specially my wife has a big issue. We use a 3G Modem to connect to internet which we get a very good connections. Modem is connected to the Router and gives the IP 192.168.1.1 to the WAN Port and the LAN is set up with 172.16.1.0 - 172.16.1.100. (Router IP: 172.16.1.1)

Clients are getting the IP in the above range and:
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.16.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.16.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 8.8.8.8
172.16.1.1
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

So than there are moments that the page wont work. I open it in a different Browser.... here you go..... this is working always when opening just in a different Browser.

I don't see the issue when I'm using VPN to my company what also uses the router (Junos VPN installed on my Laptop). When the 3G Modem is connected to the laptop directly issue is solved also.

Any Idea where to start ?

Operation Mode:Wireless router Firmware:374.40 (Merlin build)

What is the DNS server in use when working without the ASUS?
This seems like a good suspect for the cause here.

...why are you using a class B network for your home?...are 254IPs in a class C not enough?
Did you set the netmask correctly?
Why not - for example - using 192.168.101.xxx/255.255.255.0 instead?

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 8.8.8.8
172.16.1.1
Not sure that is a good idea for DNS, google and as failover the router.
How about leaving DNS in Auto mode?

What -"page" are you refering to
((172.16.1.1 your router ?? if so check/disable your VS for a moment,
or someother page ?? ))

Perhaps
try to ping the IP adress of that page
try nslookup the name of page, someone answering ? who ?
traceroute is also a nice utility
and h**p://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com

I use 172.16.x.x with C-mask no problem with that, for me.

OK Guys,

thanks for your suggestions. I took all of the Feedback as most of them make sense. So now its looking like this:

When I plug the modem to my Laptop directly:
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, April 10, 2014 11:03:08 AM
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Friday, April 11, 2014 11:03:13 AM
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
192.168.1.1
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

The Modem in the Router shows the same:
WAN Port USB
Connection type
Automatic IP
WAN IP 192.168.1.100
DNS 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.1
Gateway 192.168.1.1

Changed the IPS and the DNS to Automode on the Clients (LAN)
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.102.11(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.102.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.102.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.102.1
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.102.1

Where the IP 192.168.102.1 is the Router itself... hope that this will better now as it is really making me crazy :-) Will keep you Updated.

Still I have my pub IP 83.220.x.x but this is in the modem itself what makes the thinks also not much easier :-(

Yeah the ping tracer nslookup is always working fine as well (checked that).

Thanks for all suggestions !

well regarding the pages its random... Facebook, google, gmail, gmx.... but when opening the same time in a different browser it works fine.

...you are using the ASUS as router, not in AP mode.
This may be a double NAT problem (maybe at least parts of it).
Your clients directly connected to the modem do get a private IP and work fine.

- what modem is that...is there a router / NAT/ Firewall in it as well?
If so...use the ASUS in AP mode

- try to set the modem into bridge-mode, so when using the ASUS as router, the WAN Interface will see your public IP and public DNS assigned from your ISP.

Well yeah this modem has also kind of Routing that's why the Public IP is not coming to the router even when the ports are open. I have actual 2 of them which works with the same style. Plug them in and they are detected as a normal Ethernet Device. The One I have is the Huawei E353 and the second is ZTE MF823 (but this I screwed yesterday probably)

I belive that both of them have a NAT and a Firewall. The ZTE Device I couldnt even ping with the public IP :-(

just found that somehow I can switch the modem also to Modem Mode:

http://blog.phoenixhaven.net/category/haxx/

So it will use the usb_serial and option driver I believe.

But I would need to enter some like this:
echo “12d1 1c05″ > /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/option1/new_id

But I can not really find the usb-serial stuff or can I in a different run a command to do this same ?
... OK found it .... need to modprobe it as it is not automatically :-) Will try maybe that will work finally for me :-)

Please post your findings when you're done trying and have a working solution of doing this. It might help others.

a'ha hilink should have guessed

@all
I read in the past
To determine if it's a Hilink typ of "modem":
If the browser starts on PC it's a hilink
If a software to connect to operator starts it's not a hilink

there are many threads on internet about transforming/bricking :)
different models of modem to "normal" state

well the output is that it isn't simply working.... I switch the Modem with the http link: http://192.168.1.1/html/switchProjectMode.html (as it has its integrated webinterface when it is in this mode)

This gave me a BUS Device:
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 12d1:1442

So I used the driver which should handle this modem:
modprobe option vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1442

this enabled me the serial Core and Option:
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: usbserial: USB Serial Driver core
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: USB Serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port)
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: option 2-2:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: option 2-2:1.1: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: option 2-2:1.2: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB2
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver option
Apr 10 17:40:47 kernel: option: v0.7.2:USB Driver for GSM modems

But ... than you get the error:
Apr 10 17:40:58 pppd[6183]: pppd 2.4.5 started by admin, uid 0
Apr 10 17:40:58 rc_service: wanduck 549:notify_rc restart_wan_if 1
Apr 10 17:40:59 pppd[6183]: Child process /bin/comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB0 -s /etc/ppp/3g/Generic_conn.scr (pid 6187) terminated with signal 15
Apr 10 17:40:59 pppd[6183]: Connect script failed

I tried in Windows also with Mobile Partner and MWconn both the same result. Modem not replying.... So it Really looks I have to buy me a new Modem as I tried and played with both of them to get them in Modem Mode, but both are failing.

yeah and after switching you have to unlock the modem again..... And after 3 times adding to a PC / Router its gone back in default Mode cdc_ether .....

Maybe I will play later a bit more, but after I crashed already my LTE Modem, I only have this "nice" Huawei still left :-(

Yes its a Hilink.... I know this :-( Thats why the Problems :-( I even called Support an nothing .... well will research a bit more ....

by the way .... the AP Mode doesn't work as well as it isn't giving the IP Adresses. so this is also not working as a DHCP Server :-(

afaik Mobile partner is for non hilink modem
so to use that you have to flash it to "normal mode" if possible.

Have done that with another Huawei model,
have also removed operatorlock on yet another model.
((Mobile Partner dissapered from modemflashdrive then, no problem with that))

But I have no knowledge about E353,
but there are loads of information about e353 out there.

be careful

Well I was reading all of the the stuff around the E353Ws2 and its not possible. Always switching back in its default mode. Modem I get but cant access it... So its not working ....

Will buy me probably a ZTE821 as there you probably can get the public IP to the Router.

I'm using Huawei (noneHilink) E3276-150 LTE modem but it's "only" 3G+ here, approx 17-18Mbit/s and +2Mbit/s upload, a little bit faster on computer.
And that is 100% functional for me in dualwan config.
From beginnning locked to my operator but unlocked/flashed by me.

Just found here also one of this modems. When the modem is connected you get the normal WAN IP from you Provider ?
I see there are also Hilink versions available form this Stick. OK SO I will try again to try to explain with my poor polish what I want and what not.

Yes, normal "WAN IP" from my provider,
that don't uses hilink's att all.
If you found an e3276 there are several threads in several forum
howto transform e3276 hilink to "normal"
