New Around Here
Ok, so
Currently I am using an ASUS N65R. I had this router for about a year (got from a friend who had it for about a year). Specs can be found here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320156 .
My laptop is an ASUS G73S (specs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320156 ), my laptop is compatible with B/G/and N
Sprint was running a promotion to call them and enable WIFI calling and they will send a free ASUS SP-2015 router. This router seems to be a re-hashed AC-66U. I was fascinated by this as it was an upgrade to my router (AC > N). It turns out that all features were removed from this router though (port forwarding, VPN, etc.). I did a bit of research and modded my router. I actually modded it 5 or 6 times (I got into tomato software, but did not know how to configure it. Then I got the AC66U software, but it said it might be slower due to it not being an AC66U router - yet the bottom of the router even says so; haha).
Link to AC66U specs: https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTAC66U/
My modem is: http://www.cnet.com/products/motorola-surfboard-sb6120-cable-modem/specs/
My ISP provider: COX Communications (56Mbps down and 5Mbps up, even though I get about 58 down and 7 up)
Features I need: VPN, port forwarding
SO here is my situation:
I have a house of about 1500sq ft, not open concept. The range of the 65R is close to sufficient but not quite. I have an amazon fire TV in my room. A PS4 in the front room, and the laptops move around. I would like the streamer to be faster, and honestly I would like better internet speed around my house all together.
Which if the following should I do for hardware:
1. Get rid of the old router, use the new AC router.
2. Do not use the new router, keep the old.
3. Use both routers.
Which configuration:
1. Media Bridge. AC66U to WAN/Modem and N65R as bridge to TV
2. Media Bridge. N65R to WAN/Modem and AC666u as the bridge to TV
2. Other {please explain, I hear the terms repeater and extender}
Which of the following for software:
1. Run the new router with ASUS stock AC66U software <ignore message saying speeds may be slower>
2. Run the new router with tomato software.
3. Other software.
Do I need a new modem:
1. Yes
2. No
Finally (Bonus question):
Assuming 2 routers of the same generation, what is the difference between the R and U series. I know the R series has internal antenna's and the U has external, but they are priced similiar aren't they? So why one over the other?
Please review and be as specific as possible. I am in dire need.
