I have a R700 connected to my ISP modem and I have spotty net connection. I suspect my modem is the culprit. Can I test it somehow?

Easiest way is to swap in another modem. Your modem's admin interface may have some connection statistics you can look at. But you have to know how to interpret them.

What do you mean by "spotty"?

Android and Windows devices frequently display "internet unavailable" when connected to the wifi on either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz band. Modem's AP is disabled and router's channels are set for minimal interference with neighbors. Router is R7000 so it should be performing well.

Will call ISP and get a new modem sent over when I have some time.

Any other diagnostics? I reset both router and modem each day to be on safe side but still connection is spotty.

Next time one of your devices reports "internet unavailable", try pinging the router IP address, then ping Google.com to see if they have disconnected from the router or if the internet connection is really down.

Do you have any wired clients and do they also have the same problem?

they're definitely still connected to the router when it happens. Android even says "internet unavailable with [SSID]." it cuts out for like 3 seconds at most and then comes back. but it happens a few dozen times a day, and sometimes it behaves similarly without the "internet unavailable" message. -- pages will not load, and have to be refreshed after a few seconds when the connection "comes back."

it's hard to say if wired clients do it too as they're just NAS and rokus.

is 12-15 devices connected just too much for a consumer grade router?

thanks for your help.

Are all devices active simultaneously? This should not be a problem at all. Connected devices use very little bandwidth. Besides, they don't mess with your internet connection.

It does sound like the problem is the modem or maybe the line. Is this cable, DSL, fiber?

it's DSL, is there any way I can test the modem?
its depend on DSL MODEM, so in general you should check SNR,ATTENUATION for example.

Your ISP might be able to run some diagnostics on the modem and line.

If the problem is several times a day perhaps a batch job, run from the NAS, that pings google dns servers every minute would help.
