I have a Asus RT-AC68 router running Asuswert-Merlin 380.65. I have not identified any setting which would disable the data stream if the OpenVPN client is disconnected. I know this is available in laptop apps provided by some VPN vendors but can't see how to set that up on my router. Thanks

You can use: Block routed clients if tunnel goes down.

that works if you have policy rules enabled. but if you dont have policy rules it should be automatic to stop connection if the server drops. at least it use to be. If you are going ot use patje example make sure that you put a rule to have all your traffic via the vpn otherwise you will not have internet.
Source ip 192.168.1.1/24 destination IP 0.0.0.0 lface VPN
that will put all your traffic via the vpn tunnel assuming that your router is 192.168.1.1
