Possible to get ssh connection on AC66U without custom firmware?

I managed to telnet in, and enable the sshd-enable flag. But, even with that on I cannot get an ssh client to connect. The custom firmware is interesting to me, but currently I don't know if I'd use any of the other additional features. I do have a samba server running, but need SSH up for saving Linux backups to my network drive. Are there any other variables I need to flip if it's even possible?
