Problem in setting up ds111 - been stuck for a day!

Hello friends, i just got my new ds111 today and when I first got it, I thought it's going to be plug and play (but apparently it is not!). I didn't realize that a NAS setup would require a fiddle with the IP stuff, something which I have never really dwell in before. I am completely new to this networking stuff including their term (what is ip?).

anyway, I am connecting the ds111 directly to my macbook pro via the ethernet cable that come with the workstation. What I got so far is that I have successfully install and setup the ds111 with my macbook pro (By trying around with the ip, subnet and router - things i am not really entirely sure of). The scenario is when I connect to the synology ds111, i realized tat my macbook pro has lost its connection to internet. When I have connected to internet, the synology assistant will not be able to detect my ds111. A bit lost here as to what is going on.

Also, mind if i ask if it is possible to setup multiple volumes within the 1 bay ds111?

Would really appreciate it if someone have can lead me to any website that would show step by step for beginner like me. Otherwise, would really appreciate it if someone here can help me out

okay, after doing some setup, I have got my ds111 to connect to my macbook pro. However, here is the problem; whenever i am connected to internet, i can't connect to my diskstation and vice-versa. Would really appreciate any help that you guys can give here!

Do you have a router? Just connect the Synology to that... the way you appear to be trying to do it a USB drive would have been cheaper and easier..

Step 1

NAS connects to router LAN port.
Configure for static IP address on the NAS.

I'd think that the user manual would explain this.

Can you tell us exactly what equipment you have please. Basically tell us the names and model numbers of everything, from what you plug the cable into the wall for internet access, to your computer.

It sounds like you are trying to use the NAS as an external hard drive, which is really not how they are intended to be used.

The idea with a NAS is that you put it on a network and it will be available to everything on the network. So you don't really want to be using it the way you are.

If you just want more storage for your computer, you should just buy an external HD that connects via Firewire or USB.

IP means "Internet protocol" it's basically how devices on a network or the internet talk to each other.

Yes it is possible to create multiple volumes. The process is pretty much the same as you would do it on your mac, with the Disk Utility program. Keep in mind though, that creating multiple volumes on the NAS is almost certainly going to require you to reformat the HD in the NAS. So you will loose EVERYTHING you have on the NAS.
