New Around Here
Hi, I have this Asus router rt-n56u which i recently bought, when I try to set this up by connecting my internet cable to the wan port of the router and an another ethernet cable from the router's lan port to my pc, I see there is an activity between the lan port of the router and the PC but none on the wan port, my ISP has only provided me with the cable and the IP settings, no modem.

After this when I try to access the web interface by typing the 192.168.1.1 in the browser, I receive error messages the I'm not connected to any network, so I can't even configure my wifi also, I have followed all the steps mentioned in the manual of the router:
A. Disable the proxy server, if enabled.
B. Set the TCP/IP settings to automatically obtain an IP address.
C. Disable the dial-up connection, if enabled.

if I plug my ISP ethernet cable to my computer directly, I have no problem accessing the internet. However, when I plug the computer into the router and the router into the ISP cable, my computer can't get on the internet. I know the router is functioning because I can access it using my android phone, and I can go to 192.168.1.1 and make changes to the router. On my computer, I can't even access 192.168.1.1.

When the computer is plugged into the router, the only IP address they receive is some slug address (169.254.xx.xx) that does not work. Windows 7 reports that the computer is plugged into an "Unidentified Network."

I have also removed my norton antivirus and turned of the windows firewall, but still no use.I have also tried using static ip's but they too don't help and when i try to do ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew I get an error on the ipconfig /renew command that states that "An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out" I have checked in my services.msc and DHCP is fine and running but still somehow its not able to communicate

I'm stuck people, help me here.

Thanks & Regards,

When the computer is directly plugged in, what IP do you get? If a private 192.168 then make sure it doesn't clash with what router provides. Do you have vpn setup through isp?

Ok, the WAN port problem is resolved by placing a switch before the router, so now the connection is like this: ISP > Switch > router > devices (Only wifi). But if i connect my PC to the router through RJ45 cable, I still get the unidentified network....any guesses??? Here is the ipconfig details when I'm directly connected to the ISP (I've statically provided the IP to my NIC so that I could connect to the router but it is still not working ) router changed its IP when it detected the wan activity due to name conflict, therefore I have also changed my static IP in the range of 192.168.2.X:

The problem 169.xxx.xxx you are having is caused by Windows and your adapter not functioning together correctly and getting an IP from your ASUS. I have a laptop that is always a project to get it to work when I switch adapters.

My recommendation First attempt to fix the problem is:

Remove the switch.

Unplug or turn off your modem, the router and your PC. (Restarting Windows probably isn't going to help.) After the have been off for a minute or so power up your modem and give it several minutes to sync up with your ISP and pull a public IP. Then power up your router and let it sync up with the modem. Finally start up your PC and see if you can now access the router at 192.168.1.1 or whatever default IP is.

If this doesn't work first reset the ASUS to factory defaults then repeat the powering down and powering up cycle. Crude, but with stubborn adapters you sometimes have to use brute force.

If you still can't get into the router's admin page because your PC can't pull a private IP, using either Windows or a utility program give your PC a static IP. If the router is 192.168.1.1 then make your PC 192.168.1.10. if the Router is 192.168.2.1 then make sure your PC is in the same subnet i.e. 192.168.2.10. This is a more elegant solution, but unless you have the tool to assign your PC a static IP the previous solution will get the job done.

Thank you @CaptainSTX for the reply. My ISP doesn't provides me with a modem, and I have tried all of the above many times but let me do it once more and I'll let you know the result. I can't remove the switch if I want the wan port to detect the internet cable, it just won't blink without the switch in between(the isp cable is way too long for it to handle) but I'll try plugging only the Lan cable between PC and the router once again and test your method.
