Hey guys im from the UK, very tempted in picking up this router from Amazon for my home network, but need to make sure it will run perfect with my PS3 over wireless as I am a big call of duty fan :)

so has anyone got this router running with their PS3 straight out of the box without doing any configs?

Hi,

Actually you only need to install the latest firmware on the router...
Or you go for the Merlin-Version of the firmware: Which is more stable and gives slightly more - meaningful - feature!

Nothing else to do! Your PS3 (not XBOX) will work like a charm! ;)

With kind regards
Joe

Are you referring to firmware version 3.0.0.4.372

Ok once I get this router will test the asus firmware first if all good will stay with that to be on safe side

thanks :)

It runs great with the PS3. If you really want to get the most out of the Dark Knight for your PS3, I would also recommend picking up the EA-N66 Ethernet Adapter in order to get rid of the crowded Wireless-G signal. This way you will be able to transmit Wireless-N on the 5GHz/40MHz band by hardwiring into the adapter directly to your PS3. I recommend using category 7 cables for the hardwiring. I now run at constant speeds of 22 Down and 4.5 Up. I am running the 3.0.0.4.272 firmware on the Dark Knight and 1.0.1.8f on the adapter since the 3.0.0.4.372 firmware for the Dark Knight was having issues with the 5GHz band. You can check out my new network configuration I put together in preparation for the PS4 at the link below.

sounds like a really good setup, did not know you can get the ps3 to connect to the 5GHz band!

on your setup you mentioned that on your router you selected the N-only for the 2.4 GHz band, is this necessary to do as most of my devices don't have wireless-n?

also on the EA-N66 adapter is it possible to only use the repeater mode for it to extend the range of the 5GHz band and then connecting the adapter to the PS3

If most of your devices are not Wireless-N, then there is no reason to set it to N-only. I chose N-only since my PS3 had been the only device in my house that did not support Wireless-N. Once I got the EA-N66 to use as an adapter for my PS3, I could drop the Wireless-G signal all together.

Yes, the EA-N66 can still hardwire to devices when in repeater mode. You should have no issues connecting your PS3 in repeater mode. My PS3 is the only device connected to the 5GHz band in my house, so there was no need for me to use repeater. It is awesome playing on the 5GHz band with no interference what so ever. I am the only one on the 5GHz band in my neighborhood! :D

Hi mate, so just to clarify that if I get the EA-N66 adapter all I would need to do is disconnect the EA-N66 adapter from my laptop after the connection is been made to the 5 GHz band during setup, take the EA-N66 to where my PS3 is and connect it via Ethernet cable to my PS3 and my PS3 will find the 5ghz signal automatically?

You are correct. Your PS3 won't find the signal, the adapter will find the signal and act as if you were plugging your PS3 directly into your modem. On your PS3, you will just have to go into internet settings and choose "Wired" as your internet connection. You can even do the easy setup where it chooses all of the the best connections for you. I chose manual so I could pick 1000Base-T/Full Duplex for the speed, but I kept everything else as automatic. That way I know I am always running at the fastest connection speed.

mate do you leave your EA-N66 connected to the PS3 at all times, cos if I were to turn off the EA-N66 from the mains when I ain't using the PS3, next time I switch the EA-N66 back on will the PS3 remember the settings or will I have to go through setup again

Yes, I leave my PS3 plugged into the adapter all the time, even when the PS3 is off. The adapter is always wirelessly connected to my router. Even if I have to unplug the adapter, it instantly connects to my router once I plug it back in. Your PS3 will always connect to the adapter once you set up your PS3 internet connection as a "Wired" connection in your PS3 internet settings. It is just like hardwiring your PS3 directly into your modem. I just turn on my PS3 and it instantly logs me into the network.

If I want to run a speed test for the adapter, I can unplug it from my PS3 and plug it right into my laptop and it instantly detects my internet connection and I am good to go. It is a lot simpler than having to log into a wireless network. That step was already completed when the adapter was connected to the router. Plugging into the router is all you need to do once your PS3 is set up to automatically detect a "Wired" network.

Is it possible to plug a USB adapter into the front of a PS3 for wireless connectivity? We all know the G radio in the PS3 is garbage. So for now I have it connected to my trusty WRT54GL which is connected to my RT-N66U. Two separate networks so the G devices don't slow down my N devices.

Don't quote me on this, but I think I read an article in the past that said USB adapters cannot be used to get a wireless internet connection on the PS3. Since you don't have the EA-N66, you definitely went the right way by having two separate routers. I was thankfully able to get rid of my Wireless-G network after I hooked up my PS3 to the EA-N66. The wireless technology in the PS3 seems ancient. You would have thought they would have added Wireless-N support when they released the PS3 Slim.

I said the same thing. I need a G network still for the PS3, Wii, 3DS and an old G laptop. I really love the WRT54GL for it's third party firmware support and love playing around with it. Just tried a USB adapter and it did not work.

im getting the dns error on startup, at first it did connect and was playing multiplayer games without a prob but then when I switched off the ps3 and on again I got the dns error and says internet connection failed.

will reset the EA-N66 and connect again

my secondary dns is blank on the ps3 not sure if this has anything to do with it...

Make sure you are using firmware version 3.0.0.4.272 on your Dark Knight and 1.0.1.8f on your adapter. Firmware version 3.0.0.4.372.1393 is still having issues on the 5 GHz band. I am not sure what is causing the DNS error. Did you do the automatic internet setup on your PS3 for a "Wired" connection? I would plug one of your laptops into the adapter after you re-establish a connection to your router to make sure everything is working well. Once your internet connection looks good on your laptop at the location of your ps3, I would then unplug your laptop and plug your PS3 into the adapter. Then run the automatic internet connection on your PS3.

Also, what category ethernet cables are you using? I would recommend at least a category 6 ethernet cable, but I went with category 7 just to make sure it can transfer data at the fastest speeds possible.

In a nutshell how I set up my network with the EA-N66:
1. Updated firmware on RT-N66U and EA-N66
2. Established connection between RT-N66U and EA-N66
3. Tested connection speed of EA-N66 with laptop at location of PS3
4. Plugged PS3 into the EA-N66 and ran "Wired" network setup.
5. Enjoy online gaming with Wireless-N on 5GHz/40MHz band with zero lag

What were the steps you took in setting up your EA-N66?

my router is updated to firmware version 3.0.0.4.272 and im using cat6 cables, however on the ea-n66 setup i did the upgrade to 1.0.1.8f after i made the connection with my 5GHz band, not sure if this might be the problem.

I've factory reset the EA-N66 and will try again tomorrow as I've also noticed that a few of my devices i.e iPhone on 2.4GHz were having problems connecting to the Internet with it on.

Since I factory reset the EA-N66 the problems went away. This is so confusing lol

Tell me about it. I did a ton of research before buying and setting up my new network. Hopefully all goes well going forward for you.
