Q on CAT5, 6 DIY cables

I've crimped quite a few CAT5 plugs.
Never CAT6.
Fellow at work says CAT6 was much harder to DIY.
I didn't think the plugs differed. Maybe more shielding. Maybe something in the wires' insulation material or thickness to reduce capacitance per ft.

What say ye re DIY CAT6 cables?

Yes, more difficult and time consuming. That said, after a number of terminations it becomes second nature.

Terminating your own ends comes in handy when you purchased 1000 feet or more CAT5e or higher Ethernet cabling. If your doing a new home or redoing older one well yes. If you just running a few 6ft, 15ft, 25ft, 50ft and 100ft you can buy ones ready made. All depends on what your doing. Business clients network closet and running patch through then you go to make your own. I've been with a many Network departments and they just order what they need to re-patch closets or add new cubical jack and closet patch to switch cables ready made. Most Networking that run drops lines from the cube to the patch closet they mostly create their own terminal ends. If your going to use Jacks in the wall or on the floor then you best to make your own ends.

Ready made CAT5e are cheaper today than past years. CAT6 or higher price seems to be slightly higher.

That's a good video. I taught myself how to crimp Cat6, watching videos like these, when I re-wired my house about a month ago. Never used a "sled" before to make a cable end? Of course I use a liner, which takes some practice to use effectively.

By the way, any one knows where to buy not so expensive cables, plugs, etc, online in Europe? I'm going to rebuild my home network and I'm going for shielded (FTP?!) Cat6 cable.

About the cables, I've always terminated them the same way and they work, but maybe not at GbE. The max throughput I ever got was 20MB/s.
