Qnap TS-569L vs Synology DS1513+ vs Asustor AS-608T

New Around Here
Hey everyone

I having difficulty trying to decide which NAS box I should go for? I am currently looking at the following models.

Qnap TS-569L 5 Bay £623
Synology DS1513+ 5 Bay £642
Asustor AS-608T NAS 8 Bay £ 657

Most of it seems to come down to what is the better software but then I came across the Asustor which is a bit of a new comer to the game but gives me and additional 3 disks over the others.

They all have almost the same apps/hardware spec I just need to have a at least 5 drives for storage space the ability to play videos from my Samsung TV and option to be able to configure it for remote access so I can get to my files from anywhere.

I have had a look at the online live demos for all of them which are very similar making it hard to choose between them.

Anyone have strong views on any of these? Especially if you have any experience with an Asustor?

Thanks

Rapp

Definitely Synology 1, QNAP 2. These companies do NAS and only NAS.
Don't overbuy in # drives.
Beware: RAID is *not* a backup. Need USB3 or eSATA for that.

Asustor also only do NAS devices however they are a sub group under Asus.

I am hoping that they can break into the market and provide some competition for the big name brands like what they have managed to do with their wireless routers.

I think I am going to wait a little bit before deciding which on to choose.

ASUSTOR is backed by ASUS. But it's a crowded field and they are still a minor player. We reviewed the AS-604T in January. Good performance. But support options were minimal.

One we don't hear much about here is Thecus. They do read this. Perhaps they address video production NASes and not this forum's often consumer/retail users.

I have now decided what I am going to do and it is none of the options above.

I will be getting a HP N54L Microserver modding the bios to support up to 6 disks then looking at putting the Snology NAS OS on it

That way I get all the features I need but it only costs £130 excluding any disks.

You won't be able to do that.

I recently purchased an Asustor AS-606T and couldn't be happier with the hardware, software and support I have received from Asustor.

Why not? I have read about quite a few people doing that or putting ESXi on it and then hosting a machine which runs it.
You'd take the source code and try to build a system with a different target CPU and binaries, and device drivers. I've read where others tried to do this, with Synology and other's product software, and failed (not unexpectedly). Reason is legally they're not required to release to the public 100% of the software. And the complexity is huge but the documentation is nill, as it should be. Given their investments.

Or did you have a simpler method?
