I have an Asus RT-AC56U (AC1200) running the latest firmware. My Comcast internet speed via an Arris SB-6141 modem is around 180 mbps down and 6.5 mbps up which is faster than the 150/5 service I'm paying for. The only device I use WiFi for is a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone which supports dual band but not AC. I have a power line network for other devices.

Using a WiFi analyzer app, I've selected channel 157 on the 5 gHz band and am the only one on it in my small apt complex.

According to the Ookla speed test app I'm getting 40 down and 6 up. Why is the speed a fraction of what it is on the LAN? Is it the router or phone? Would upgrading the router change anything? The Asus has been rock solid though. Thanks.

you're going to be limited by the speed of your old Galaxy S3. It depends on how many radios it has (probably only 1). If my guess is right then that means it's an "N150"equivalent, so I wouldn't expect more than 75bps possible theoretical speed.

If it helps, I've got an old Galaxy Tab 3 which only gets 30 or 40 mbps on a good day.

You can clearly see from my results that the client device feature set has a major impact on the potential WiFi speeds. These tests were done against a Ubiquiti UAP-AC-IW which is a 2x2 AC device. Very clear the Fire Tablet is a 2.4GHz only device. And you can easily tell that the S3 doesn't support AC and runs at roughly 50% of its N150 capability. I did confirm my S3 is linked to my UAP-AC-IW at 150Mbps.

Amazon Fire Tablet 7"
- 29.9/36.8

iPhone6s
- 172/254
- 234/213

Galaxy S3
- 88.6/60.4
- 89.2/59.1

Your RT-AC56U is capable of 2x2 AC with a max link speed of 866 Mbps so roughly 1/2 to 2/3's of that value real world throughput. As others have said your phone is the limiting device. It is most likely a 1x1 N device so 150 link speed. I think you should be getting faster speeds during your speedtest though. Go into settings>wifi and click on the connection. It should show you your link speed. I believe my old N7 has a similar SoC to your S3. I get a link speed of 150 Mbps. My speedtest results are 61 down and 93 up. Have you tried resetting your router to factory defaults and setting up manually (don't import saved settings)?

Try changing the following options from the defaults. These changes have helped others here at SNB.

Wireless 2.4 GHz Professional
Turbo QAM - Disable (Only helps with clients that support it and there are not very many)
Airtime Fairness - Disable
Explicit Beamforming - Disable
Universal Beamforming - Disable

Wireless 5 GHz Professional
Airtime Fairness - Disable
Universal Beamforming - Disable

I checked the Asus website. Firmware Version 3.0.0.4.382.50010 is the latest. Have you done a factory reset since jumping from the 380 branch to the 382 branch? And remember, you do the factory reset after installing the new firmware, not before. Take screenshots of any custom settings that you have before upgrading to help you reconfigure the router after the reset.
