New Around Here
Hi, I have been having issues with my R7800 since I purchased it, I have a thread on their support forums as well with no help, I thought I would try some experts as well.

I have my main gaming PC and a NAS hooked up wired to the router and every other device in the house on WiFi. I have zero issues with WiFi, updated from an Asus RT-N66R and the speed/range is fine. I only have issues with my main PC's wired connection. I turn it on/off with use as some times it may go 2-3 days without use. The problem I have is when I boot up the PC it shows "unidentified network" and the only thing that fixes the problem is a router reboot. I have so far: changed ethernet cables, changed jacks on the back of the router, set static IP for the PC, updated/reverted firmware on router, uninstalled and reinstalled NIC and drivers, ipconfig /release and /renew, enabled and disabled IPv6 on adapter. Nothing I can do on the PC when it is unidentified ever helps, resetting adapter, use the windows diagnosis thing, reboot. It is only solved with a router reboot and then things work fine. NAS is also hooked up wired and is powered on 24/7 (I use the cloud/streaming features often) and it has no issues and looking through the log I can not see that it ever disconnects from the network.

Any ideas at all would help, thanks!

Wow, that sucks, I was excited about the router and everything except this problem is great so far. I have been searching for others with similar issues, but I can only find things relating to WiFi. Are there any reports that RMAing and replacing the unit has any effect? Thanks for the reply.

Looks to be more of a Windows, and, or possibly, a Security app setting blocking the connection. If you google "PC shows "unidentified network" there's a lot of stuff to read on the subject. have you updated your NIC card drivers?

I have this router, and had it up for about 3 weeks with the latest firmware with no problem. As of today it's been up about another week...with my dual-boot desktop, I was using Linux with no problems, then switched to Windows 10 to catch the honking big new update *smile*, and found "unidentified network", with no connection on Windows. Luckily I have both a wireless and wired connection, so I switched over to the wireless one and that was working, so I didn't think it was the router. Re-installed the wired network interface driver, didn't help. So I went back to Linux to see what that looked like, and no wired connection, so I gave up and rebooted the router. Then it was all good.

Color me surprised after all the up time that I've had. Odd. However, since I saw it on both Windows and Linux, I have to think that it's more of a router firmware thing than a Windows thing *smile*.

I've had this router for about a month now and haven't experienced the unidentified network issue. I'm running windows 10 on my pc's.

I've been a reader of this site for many years but finally just registered today so I could post in this thread. I was able to replicate this issue myself after seeing posts on NETGEAR's forum about this. Curious: Do any of you have an xbox one plugged directly in to the router when this happens? I'm trying to figure out what combination of devices or ports causes this. I've only had a 24-port gig switched plugged into the r7800 for weeks without issue but this problem happened overnight as soon as I plugged some devices from my switch directly into the remaining wired LAN ports of the router. The only one that was active was the xbox one before it crashed. You can see my post here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Ni...-but-wireless-still-works/td-p/1106204/page/3

Just curious if you've noticed a particular port or device plugged in that would cause the switch to stop working. I'm trying a different combination of devices tonight to see if I can get it to crash again and will report back.

Just to update this, I RMA'd the router and the new unit seems to be working fine, I have had it for just over a week now and the original issue has not happened at all. I am still getting my good wireless signals and the PC I use for gaming nightly is working just fine on ethernet. I will update the thread if anything further happens, but so far it appears I had a bad unit.

I tried all four ports on the router multiple times over the 3 months I had the router. All had the same issue. I do have an xbox one plugged in on ethernet that I have not used much recently. The couple times I booted it up it seemed to work fine, I also have it on the less asleep mode (i forget the name, the one that automatically updates when "off" and boots quicker). This problem only happened on the Windows 10 PC that I completely turn off nightly and reboot the following night.

EDIT: To clarify also the question from coolguy949. I noticed you have a switch, I just wanted to point out I have 3 things plugged directly into the back of the router. A Windows 10 PC (with a Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I217-V adapter), a Netgear ReadyNAS (102 that stays on 24/7), and an Xbox One that I may have turned on twice in the last 3 months (resting it for Destiny expansion in Sept...). I switched and swapped the plug ins between devices multiple times with no change.

Glad you got it resolved! Keep us posted on the issue with your replacement. How often did the issue happen? I haven't had it happen again since I rebooted the router about 4 days ago. Was it happening since you first got the router?

It was happening ever since I first got the router, but it seems like it happened less often. I sort of wrote it off as bleeding edge router with new firmware problems. After I installed the second firmware update in July and the frequency did not diminish I contacted support. I would say it happened more often the longer I had the router and that it happened 4 out of 5 times I would turn the PC on towards the end.

As I mentioned above, this happened to me only once. Just got back a few days ago from a couple of week vacation while we had housesitters in the house that used wireless a bunch, and the router has been up for over 3 weeks now. Which is close to a record for me, I usually do something like a flash or a reboot to not allow me to have long periods of uptime. So what I saw may have been a one-time thing, time will tell.

I recently switched from Asus 87u to the R7800. This is my first experience with Netgear. My initial reaction when logging in to the R7800 was "what a sad, pathetic U.I." but everything is there and it's easy to navigate. I am pleased with the router now, but was definitely not at first. I should mention that I have 2 of these, one as a router and the other as a bridge. I had the OP's problem with wired windows 8.1 PC's and what corrected that for me was to delete all stored network entries in windows registry- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\- and reboot. Assigned a static ip,as I do with everyting on my network, reserved the addresses in router settings and now all my devices connect and stay connected perfectly. WIFI was terrible as well but I learned that it's best to wipe, flash and wipe again when updating firmware. Latest firmware is pretty stable and the wireless is great. The connection and throughput to the other 7800 in bridge mode is incredible. I have a switch plugged in to the bridge with 4 more devices for a total of 7- 3 pc's,ps3,ps4,hp printer.By far the best media bridge performance I have ever experienced. Another problem I had was with my galaxy s7. It worked fine with my 87u, but barely connected and crawled on the 7800. To fix this I assigned a static ip to the s7 and reserved in the router. Now the connection is stable and fast. It also corrected my Google account not syncing problem. I did this for my sons s7 as well and both phones are working great on both 2.4 & 5ghz bands. Another issue I experienced was with transferring files to WD 4tb usb 3.0 connected hard drive. It worked perfectly with the 87u but with the 7800 I would get a permissions error when trying to transfer files. I did delete everything generated on the drive buy the asus router before connecting to the netgear. The netgear creates it's own files and folders for archiving. To remedy this I renamed the folders on the drive and created new folders while connected to the router. Safely removed drive from advanced-readyshare menu, connected to windows pc and transferd all files from old to new folders. Deleted old folders and re connected to the router. Now I can transfer files and the transfer rate is way faster than it was on the 87u. In fact everything about the 7800 is much better than the asus. Except for the depressing but functional U.I. Once all my issues were addressed I have not had to reboot or even touch these units in about 4 weeks now. So far this is the best router I have had since my trusty DIR-655 which is still running strong at my friends house. Just thought I'd share my experience. May help others having the same issues I had with this great piece of hardware.

My 7800 does not show that symptom so far. My NIC is Realtek GBE family controller. One more PC connected via wire is son's Dell Latitude E6520 which has Intel 82579LM Gbit NIC. He never complains. He turns off his laptop B4 going to work, turns it back on when he comes home in the evening. s/n of my router is 4H415B5Y030BE. Running W10 Pro 64 bit & W7 Ultimate 64 bit. One more wire connected is Synology NAS. Since day 1 this router was only
down for f/w updates. Just runs 24/7.

Guys, did the new firmware from NETGEAR this month solve this issue for you? I no longer have the router, as I have returned it but I am tempted again by the new sales this week and new firmware.

Day 1 of the new unit and the problem occurred. I guess i will start the process with Netgear. I was going through some old threads and noticed several people all had issues and xbox ones. I too have an Xbox One plugged in (with the always on mode). Is there any word of that actually being an issue?

i believe the current firmware 1.2.28 is stable and no issues on Internet and DHCP issues reported by Wired devices.

Check it out. this router is best buy for Quad stream and 160MHz future devices proof support.

Also it gives close to 90+ MB/s read and 70MB/s write on Flash drive with usb 3.0 support. So good for attached storage.

This is becoming alternative upper router to R7000.

Haven't seen this issue in a long time...been using Voxel's third-party firmware, no problems with it. Generally speaking, routers aren't sold with the latest firmware, they're sold with whatever version that batch had on it when it was manufactured. I doubt that you'll see this problem with either the latest Netgear firmware or with the latest Voxel firmware:

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/custom-firmware-build-for-r7800-v-1-0-2-30sf.38366/

So please read about how to upgrade firmware, like reading the release notes for the latest firmware, and do the upgrade. You'll be much happier.

I have a weired issue after the database update at time the connected wireless client losses internet. No specific time not much frequently. And the wiered part is it is still connected to router. I have to disconnect the client and re-connect to get the internet back

And major bug or flaw which i am experiencing is that the QOS is broken when an idle client trying to reconnect back to the router it breaks the qos feature.

Some logs for it to confirm

Just to update this, I RMA'd the router and the new unit seems to be working fine, I have had it for just over a week now and the original issue has not happened at all. I will update the thread if anything further happens, but so far it appears I had a bad unit.

So getting another unit from netgear fixed the issue? The only thing I have plugged in is my Xbox 1 S. I prefer it plugged in. But the wifi works fine on laptops iPads and phones.
