Still under Warranty, 8/20/2015 purchase. I didn't have this problem until I installed Merlin. So, I am going to try the factory firmware before I call in the warranty for replacement.

It froze today.
Good luck. Report back here if you can so everyone knows the deal. Thanks

The RT-AC68U is known to have issues with 380.57 and with the last two Asus releases (3.0.0.4.380_1xxx). You have to switch to either 378.56_2, 380.58 beta1, or an Asus firmware from the 3.0.0.4.378_xxxx series.

Thanks, Eric

Just saw that you released 380.58 I will give that a shot. Thanks again

I tried 380.58 and still got the problem 2.4ghz dropping out. After it froze I installed the ASUS Firmware 378.56_2

So far no issues - 2 days 1 hour uptime

Hi Guys,
I'm not sure if i should open a new Thread or not.
But IMO i got a very similar problem so i here we go...

Since i bought the Asus RT-AC68U i got kind of strange issues (Freezing?).
I got a 1Gigabit symetrical line from my ISP. Speedtest results are pretty good around 880-940 Mbps DL/UL with RT-AC68U.
But i get about once a week a complete freeze (since i switched from RT-N66U to RT-AC68U).

Yesterday the router froze again and even after a quick reboot it startet to freeze again in a very short time.
I think as long as i push enough traffic thru my router after a fresh restart it will just simply freeze again. (Usually PC --> NAS Transfer is about 80-100MByte/s)
But yesterday it was "just" 2 Files that i started to download thru uTorrent on my MainPC that forced my Router to freeze a few times in a row.
Even the 5GHz Wifi is suddenly gone :/

Thx in advance!
P.S: I genuinely apologise for my bad english

Your English is just fine. :)

Just to clarify, was the RT-N66U giving you expected performance from your Gbit ISP speeds previously?

Can you limit the utorrent connections to about 50 and see if the problem still persists?

What options/features do you have enabled and using on your RT-AC68U other than defaults?

Have you tried resetting to factory defaults on the version of firmware you're currently running?

Have you tried the latest RMerlin firmware instead (with factory resetting to defaults)?

Sorry for my late reply! Unfortunately i'm very busy atm.
But as you guys suggested, i will try all those things and post the news asap (probably not before this weekend).

Best way to start would be to flash the newest MerlinWRT (380.58) then do a Factory Reset and see if i get any similar issues or not.
Thx guys!

No not at all.. i used RT-N66U (Shibby Tomato).
I was very happy with the GUI and the settings possibility but the WAN <--> LAN Speed was just not good enough. About 250 Mbps (i guess because of the Broadcom driver difference)

@Sanna1967
About the Temp reading... is that also available on the AsusWRT or only on MerlinWRT?
i couldn't find any temp readings on the AsusWRT GUI.

There's been two recent threads with folks experiencing weird router problems. One turned out seemingly to be related to bad router location and the other apparently from interference caused by a usb cable plugged into the router. Just something to consider. For some location tips, you might read through 10 biggest home networking mistakes (and how to fix them) and 10 Huge Wi-Fi Antenna Mistakes. I read theserecently and found it informative, maybe you will to. Or not, hah. Good luck.
I recently switched 1 omni direction to a Alfa directional and it fixed a lot of my problems with the router being upstairs and the client being downstairs. I use 2 omni directional for my upstairs clients and the directional for downstairs.

That being said I think 380 57 and 58 are having problems with the asus AC66R/U.... My router has been dropping connections a lot more and locking up randomly. May switch back to 378.

Does this include the AC66R/U? I may have to switch back to 378 if that is the case. Any chance of a build with the openvpn upgrades into asus firmware 378?

Not that I'm aware of. Would have to be a totally different issue, since the RT-AC68U issue is specific to its wireless driver.

I seem to be getting some kind of freeze every couple of days on either .57 or .58 too, not sure how to try debug cause?

Latest one on a bit of testing, router was still responding to pings, and could infact log in to SSH, but once logged in, no input was accepted, or at least echoed back once at command prompt.

WEB UI non responsive, no internet access. I was running ok for a week or two on asus firmware before moving over to merlin for extra functionality and easier access to TCP timeout settings etc. ( I need at least a few hours )

I'll look at doing a factory reset and reconfiguring port forwards etc.

Makes sense. I keep finding conflicting sources on what 2.4 ghz chip the AC68U uses (one site says BCM4709 while another claims BCM4360 (which doesn't make sense).

BCM4708/BCM4709 is a CPU+Switch, while BCM4360 is a radio chip. The wifi part itself is from the BCM4360. Therefore, the RT-AC68U has one BCM4708/BCM4709 (depending on revision), and two BCM4360.

So the AC66U has a BCM4331 and a BCM 4360?

can you share a copy of your syslog? do you have smb shares enabled?
Sorry, I was away on a trip. I have installed the ASUS build and not having any problems. I don't recall having that turned on, I don't have a drive attached just a thumb drive I used for the tools.

do you want the current syslogs or would you like to me try the Merlin build again?

I haven't experienced any freeze-issues since i flashed Merlin's 380.58 FW on my RT-AC68U *knocking on wood*
It's for at least 1 Month running :)

Thx for everything!
Cheers

Running 380.58, I am experiencing GUI and OpenVPN freezes anywhere from 1 day to 3 days after reboot. I have turned off all wifi and there is no USB device connected. My web power strip doesn't power cycle the ASUS because it still responds to pings, so when this lockup occurs I ssh to the ASUS and execute a 'reboot' to recover. I have scheduled roboots twice a week in a failed attempt to avoid the lockups.
Is there any reason to expect that 380.59 would address this lockup problem?
If not, it may be time to switch routers ;=(

Thanks for your response.
I have one OpenVPN client session always open and that is a key feature requirement for this installation. In an effort minimize the load on the ASUS, I have just turned off the Traffic Analyzer -> Statistics feature, but that is almost a second critical feature requirement.
So I may bail out on the ASUS and replace it with a little Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X to get back those feature and hopefully much better stability than I am seeing on all four of my ASUS Merlin routers ;=(
