Recommendation on NAS for home use?

hi,
as Synology now is making it impossible to continue using their devices - looking for advice on what instead our old Synology DS412+?

Requirements:
- 2 - 4 bay system
- RAID support (2-bay: RAID 0&1 - bigger more ;) )
- RJ-45 port ( 1GBe enough)
- Usage: file, photo, audio and media servers
- Android/ioS app support over home WLAN (have WLAN router) - good if can automatically backup photos from phone in the background
- No requirements of outside access to and from home VLAN - except for fetching updates. (no accessing the server outside home)
- No additional running service fees.

Other things I do value high
- Support -- as current NAS been in usage well over a decade with support until 1-2 years ago... I do value the length of support
- UPS support through USB - have an APC UPS to protect the NAS. (Great when in power failure the NAS can safely shut itself down as UPS sends signal)

Price is negotiable, as if one get's a decade or more supported lifespan for system like this -- then price/year

So what other brands should one consider for a NAS for home use? (Besides this one brand that now has made it impossible to use their products 😭 )

What is it that your current NAS is not doing that you need it to? Sounds like your needs are pretty basic. I run 15+ year old (D-Link DNS323) NAS that haven't seen an update in over a decade and they still perform the job I wanted them to when I got them. I also have somewhat newer units to supplement (QNAP TS-231P and TS-563)

The other player is really QNAP. Some people hate it, some don't , same as Synology.

Why don't you have a look at U-Green 2 bay and 4 bay NAS. SSD/SATA3 or full size HDD if you want huge storage for cheap.

Move the drives from your current Synology to the new Synology then upgrade the drives one at a time with new WD Red. You will loose nothing.

Or if you get new WD drives, double check the features that Synology is reserving for their drives versus ordinary new drives. Maybe you don't have need for the "advanced" features ? In which case, no change for you.

My read on this new policy is because of SMR drives that were sold for NAS use. I bought a Synology NAS from B&H and the WD drives that came with it were SMR. It is the only time I had a go around with B&H and sent the drives back for CMR drives. Then there is the Seagate fiasco (I will never use a Seagate hard drive!).

Currently it does what is needed and yes our need is pretty basic and last I checked we still had a 4 * WD red+ 3TB drives in mint condition.
But for example had to go find the outdated DS Photo app to android phone that supported DSM 6.2.xx when wife got a new phone last autumn and question is how long will his still work? (I also use it)
