I've been very pleased with reusing an older 80GB SSD.

So I highly recommend if you have a smaller/older SSD laying around, purchase a UGREEN case and then use the USB 2.0 port. What you will get is a stable, reliable, trouble, heat free solution. My setup has not blinked since I did this!
USB keys, I do not think in general, are designed for constant workloads with scripts running on them but they will work - many people are using them.

Most mainstream SSDs in the smaller sizes have gotten very economical too. There's also always ebay where you can find almost any size.

I've been very pleased with the UGREEN cases b/c they have one of the better controllers.

Later.

1) is there a way to transfer/copy everything from the old USB drive to the new one - or is it recommended to format and reinstall all the scripts from scratch on the new drive?

The experts will correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't it be a good idea to backup the ca.crt and ca.key files from pixelserv and then copy them back after the fresh install to save updating all your clients with the new certs?

Absolutely! I have a half dozen copies in various drives and clouds. I make redundant backups of everything computer, phone, router, etc., etc., that I can.

I had a 256GB Sandisk USB flash drive working for about 2 years until it became read-only (damaged). That used to be hot all the time in the 3.0 slot, and fast. Then I had to use as temporary solution a 32GB Kingston 2.0 flash drive, which was very slow either in 2.0 and 3.0 mode in the same slot. But not as hot as the Sandisk. Yesterday I switched to a new Sandisk USB-SSD Extreme Pro 128GB, which is very hot, again. But it's fast at least. However I was struggling a lot with data migration... From one AC68U WHITE to another AC68U - today I will start all over again, because my partition name suddenly changed to a (1) at the end, so that the scripts did not work well.
I will check the temperature afterwards again.

I use a 16GB Sandisk Cruzer Fit USB 2.0 and performance has been fine for Skynet/Diversion. Reason I went with USB 2 instead of 3 is that these small drives can get exceptionally hot, so not something I like having in use 24/7

Walmart has a cheap / not a fancy brand 3.1 USB w/ 256G SSD and it works with my 86u. I can only say - been working for me for 60 + days without a hitch. It was 45 bucks. I tried USB sticks (old and new) - they were slow for me. I got this one because it looks like the same colors. Speed isn’t a issue anymore. Okay - back to breaking boards.
