I have an Asus RT-AC68U as my primary router connected with a Linksys EA6900 as an access point. The EA6900 has very poor wifi range and speed and often needs to be rebooted. What would you suggest as a replacement for the EA6900? I dont know anything about new routers or mesh devices. I need the access point in my livingroom to cover half of my house and some outside surveillance cameras. My house is about 1640 squarefeet and i have 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz devices. Is buying an Asus RT-AC88U as new primary router and replace the EA6900 with my old 68U a good option or overkill?

Well in my case
The ac87u covered my complete home and even until the end of the garden when the standard router dit not
For acces point. Only the 88 support repeater mode (wifi ) but the 87 supports media bridge mode xd

I don't see where it says it's for USA only.
It says routers must be from the same wifi region, so buy another router from Europe.
Then they will be from the same region.

"There will be more ASUS routers support AMAS in the future, this beta test, ASUS releases RT-AC68U(Series product), RT-A1900P, RT-AC86U first. (Note: System must be the same regulation, do not combine different WiFi region models.)"

Have you tried to use the EA6900 as a Router and the RT-AC68U as a AP instead?

Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LITE/LR/PRO one of this will fit you like a glove
Thank you for your input, however this Ubiquiti seems to only be powered by POE which I dont have the equipment for.
It looks like Ubiquiti is awesome on range. What would I have to buy to make it work with my RT-AC68U?

Thank you for your answer, I think I misunderstood the message from ASUS. Good to know that I can use one of their routers with the beta firmware. Is it safe to do the update?

As much as I would like the thought of using the RT-AC68U as my AP, I would loose the nice built-in features it has if I had to use the EA6900 as a router.
On top of that, I would still have to use the EA6900 as an AP. I am seeking advice on what to buy if I want to replace the EA6900 as I think it is a piece of crap.
The features are less and the Wifi range is low.

No they dont you get a PoE-injektor in the box just connect to that, trust me the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR or the PRO is wath you are after its a 3x3 on both bands device like your RT-AC68U.

Can the LAN cable from the router go through a switch before it goes into the ubiquity AP? What is the difference between the three models lite/ac/pro? Would I benefit from buying one of their routers or switches compared to my RT-AC68U and a "normal" consumer 8 port gigabit switch?

no you wont
exept if your switch support POE

it is basicly just a lan cable that get used to power the device
so you only need 1 lan cable
the POE unit is also a kind of switch , exept that you need it or else the device does not have any power
so if you mean that you first put the cable true a switch , then on the POE injector and then to the device then it works
if you mean first from the POE then to the switch and then to the device ... then it doesnt have any power
or you need a POE switch , where it get its power from and then you do not need the injector anymore ( as that is basicly a POE switch )

I appreciate all the suggestions about ubiquiti products but I am starter to Wonder if I would be better off with a set of Orbi. When I read tests it seems the Orbi has better range and higher up and downlink speeds compared to the AP from Ubiquiti. Please let me know if a am wrong. The only downside to the Orbi as I see it is the missing LAN backhaul.

UBNT has a POE injector that one can plug into the mains to power the AP - if it's not included in the kit, it can be purchased as an accessory.

Thats up to you now, but still you get 1Gbps LAN backhaul , 400Mbps on the 2.4GHz wifi and 1300Mbps on the 5GHz wifi with the and its a 3x3 as your RT-AC68U and all that for 1/3 of the cost from a AP Ubiquiti.
