Replacement for RT-AC87U

Been having issues lately with device in regards to locking up, 5Ghz wireless being flakey, etc.

The device is approximately 4 years old.

I have approximately 40 devices on my network.

I also use OpenVPN and Port Forwarding.

I still want to continue to use Merlin.

Suggestions for the next router?

Asus AC2900 AC86U apparently. Seems to be the best and most recommended, especially for VPN/Merlin users. Though - it seems to be out of stock everywhere right now..should be back later this month..setup alerts.

I'm in the same boat. My 87 is having issues. Trying the latest Merlin Beta right now. Now I'm just figure out if I want another traditional router or something like the Netgear Orbi RBK50 (2 pack)

AC86U seems like a good bet for the VPN with Merlin. Personally I am ditching Asus as like you I have enountered issues and trying out Ubiquity instead.

So far it is working very well. None of the issues I was having with 5Ghz.
