Request for feedback: Dual WAN

At this point, I don't see enough real Dual WAN users to justify releasing the firmware with this half-working feature. So for the next release I intend to start making releases without that feature enabled, leaving only the regular USB failover feature.

Once Asus makes more progress on the Dual WAN front, then I will re-evaluate the possibility of enabling it again.

If Asus releases start slowing down over the next weeks, I might also consider making occasional DualWAN-enabled releases, however there is no guarantee there (and as before, they would be labeled as experimental and unsupported).

In the mean time I will try to ask my contact at Asus what are Asus' plans regarding the Dual WAN feature.

I wonder if there are still problems with real dual-wan scenario in latest
Asuswrt-Merlin 3.0.0.4.260.21? I still need to use dual-wan, but for now i'm strictly thinking about tomato dual-wan in Chinese interface (google chrome will help to set it up :) ) cause i need reliable stable work solution for duai-wan (not usb 4G) failover...

Or situation is the same as in 3.0.0.4.220.18?

Hi, I'm trying to set dual wan via WAN+LAN (WAN is with PPPoE, LAN is with PPTP). When going to WAN page changing WAN type doesn't change network settings below on this page, so i can't set separately WAN0 (WAN) and WAN1 (LAN). Of course, Duai WAN is enabled and firmware is Merlin 3.0.0.4.220.18b. Tried FF 15.0.1 and IE8 - same issue. If setting dual wan to WAN+USB - works fine, setting to WAN+LAN - can't setup. Pls help!

Is there any feedback from ASUS about this?

DualWAN is still as unusable in 260.21 as it was in 220.18.

Give them time to answer - it's the weekend after all.

I Will Use Dual WAN

I have 35Mb/s cable and 2.5Mb/s services, so I will definitely use it for auto-fail-over. I'm setup to use it now with the DSL setup as secondary WAN on LAN port 4, but it is obviously not working properly. It seems to get confused about which link is primary and secondary after a fail-over.

I think we got the best of both world now, since making two separate releases with 3.0.0.4.264.22:

- Regular build (with DualWAN now disabled)
- Experimental build (which contains amongst other things DualWAN)

Dual Wan = very attractive

I am a VERY keen user of Dual WAN. I work from home and remotely access servers in a data center. I need continuous connections, and even the most reliable ISP will go down. Hence, I have a primary cable ISP (fast-ish) and a backup DSL ISP (slow). I am using LAN1 for the failover WAN, connected to the DSL ISP's modem.
My DSL I noticed that upon initial bootup, the DHCP on my RT-N66u was overridden by the DHCP on the DSL ISP's modem connected to LAN1. My wired clients, connected to LAN2 3 and 4, were getting IPs in the scope that the DSL modem handed out, rather than the internal DHCP.
I am still testing failover, and I realize this is experimental, but I am KEENLY watching this feature. It is in fact by far the most important feature for me. All this AiCloud rubbish is a distraction. (I have enough cloud services - what I don't have is a redundant ISP connection to get to them!)

I have similar sentiments. I'd MUCH rather see Asus focus on providing improvements for their hardware/software (core competencies) (like the dual-wan functionality in the AC-66U) rather than being distracted by providing yet another cloud service that nobody really needs. Far be it from me to tell them how to run their business though :).

AiCloud as a feature will be used by far more users than Dual WAN, so I can understand why they would focus their development on AiCloud first. This being said, they ARE working on implementing DualWAN, it will just take them time to finalize that feature to a point where it can be really usable. Just a matter of patience, software development can take time, especially when dealing with such a large variety of connection types.

OK, point taken. To be honest, I used Dual Wan as an example in order to keep my reply on topic :D. What I was actually thinking was that I'd prefer they focus on making the system stable & perform as advertised before adding new features like AiCloud. To be blunt, if you weren't doing the work you do to stabilize asuswrt, I'd have returned my RT-AC66U.

Has anything come of this? I just hooked up my device as dual WAN and immediately ran into the problem. Has anybody found any work-arounds?

Once the device transfers, is there any way to get it to switch back, if your remote?

Thanks in advance,

gk

Dual WAN Wireless

Hi all, hi Merlin!

First I must thanks for great job on custom firmware: i really appreciate it!

I have RT-AC68U and 2 ADSL lines: home (dlink) + office (the asus). I'd like to use in office the home bandwidth, but street split both line and i cannot connect a cable so second WAN.

So, there is a way to use second WAN as wireless?

WAN1: modem ADSL2+ -> cable WAN1 -> RT-AC68U -> Office network
WAN2: modem ADSL2+ -> wifi link -> RT-AC68U wifi in -> Office network

Thank you!

No, the router cannot act as a wifi client for WAN purposes.

I guess a separat wifi link configured as a bridge could work? But that would take two more boxes (or at least one more, if the ADSL2+ modem already has WiFi).

I see.

Well, I hope in future Asus will able to add this feature: lot of my customer want to use WiFi for WAN (2 family, the same house, only one modem, no wire).

Its so difficult to say to modem "connect at wifi xyz, this is WPA, get new WAN IP and put bandwidth to LAN"? (its a serious question)

Aside from having to tell the wireless driver to start acting as a client instead of an AP, you also have to handle all the internal routing to handle that virtual interface as a WAN interface.

Got it. Well.. never mind: i trust in you ;)

hi folks, im currently running 3.0.0.4.374.35_4-sdk5 on the RT-N66U. I want to set up dual wan load balancing but an not sure about the load balance configuration. I'm assuming its ratios and my two internet speeds are 120Mb and 20Mb so would i put 6:1?
