MiroTik's and EdgeRouter's are nice because they do have support from the vendors - so if one needs some assistance, one can open a ticket and get good help - and the vendors are pretty good about it.
pfSense is a good choice, but one is kind of on their own to sort things - they have a good web forum, and you can purchase support agreements on pfSense - e.g. pfSense Gold and of course they'll support their branded hardware (which is designed by ADI Engineering and built by Netgate for many of their appliances).
All are good choices - and keep in mind, they all have a bit of a learning curve compared to consumer Router/AP's - these are true routers and firewalls, and have capability far beyond what one would find with a consumer grade "router".
Some use HW acceleration, some use brute force, and some have interesting approaches to how things run inside - but generally, if you have a high demand network where you need to support many clients/connections - they'll outperform anything that you'll find at the local BestBuy/FutureShop/retailer that is a combo router/ap/switch...
It's a different class of product, and a different market..
