Maybe I should read more and learn some of the concepts before switching from the stock firmware.

Sound like a good plan. Once you know what’s available in stock Asuswrt and how it works it will be much more clear for you what else you may want from your router to do.

you gotta' start somewhere... however, very generally regardless of which firmware you run - Number 1 -> don't misconfigure your router to allow access from the outside world...

specifically (if you need it) only allow ssh 'LAN only' access - and set your ssh port to another port number other than default stock... for example a random number in the 40000 or 50000 range...

The router is secure by default. Don’t forget the User Manual. It’s written for people with very little networking knowledge. Use it as reference.
